SULTAN WILL PAY
New York, Nov. 4 A threat by the
French government to stop the quota
tion of the Turkish loan of 1896 on the
Paris brouse unless the porte gave
Losando and Tubini a 'written engage
ment to pay them out of the proceeds
of the Turkish debt conversion, has,
according to a Timies dispatch from
Constantinople by way of Londan, pro
duced the desired effect and the mat
ter has been settled by the porte.
The Losando and Tubini claims were
partly the cause of the dispatch of a
French squadron to the island of
Mdtylene just a year ago. As a resuat
of that action, the sultan promises to
satisfy all the French demands.

British Steel Trust?
New York, Nov. 4. While denials of
J. P. Morgan's, London partners' re
specting .prospective purchases of the
coal- fields and collieries of Stafford
shire, are considered unconvincing in
that quarter, it is evident, cables- the
London correspondent of the Tribune,
that a combination of some kind has
r been formed for controlling the pro-
auction. of the collieries. If this com
bipation be exclusively British it will
be followed by a similar moevment in
other mdning sections. ; ,
Amalgamations of the British iron
and isteel industries are, constantly go
ing into effect. A British steel trust
many toe the final result, after numer
ous small amalgamations. .
