Gibson of Knoxville were at the New
Oregon yesterday. They are in town
with a large drove of horses which they
intend to sell here.
Rev. George W. Muckley of Kansas
City, Mo., arrived in the city last even
ing from Columbia, S. C, and is the
guest of Mr. Omer, pastor of the Chris
tian church. Mr. Muckley is corres
ponding secretary of the church extern
sion board of the American Christian
Missionary society. He has filled the
office for twelve years and is a most
enthusiastic worker, and under his wise
leadership the fund has grown from a'
few thousand dollars to over $350,000.
Mr. Muckley will make an address to
night at 7:45 oclock at the Christian
church.
Rev. J. E. Gay, who in the future -will
have charge of the Haywood Street
Methodist church, is secretary of the
conference board of missions. Mr. Gay
has been pastor of the High Point
Methodist church for one year, before
which time he had a charge in Char
lotte for two years.
There were five cases in police court
yesterday. Four women were up on
charge of an affray. Two were ac
quitted and two were found guilty. One
Edgar Baldwin bad the privilege of
paying a fine for wife beating.
The annual sermon to the Jr. O. U.
A. M. is to be preached on the first
Sunday in December by Rev. Frank
Siler.
The French Broad council, Jr. O. U.
A. M. intend to place a large U. S.
flag over the new West End school
house as soon as the building is completed.
Work on the Y. M. C. A. building
has ceased for the ipast faw days on
account of a lack of material. Ship
ments of slate have been expected for
several days.
A drove of mules arrived from Ten
nessee yesterday. Part of them will
be sold on the Asheville market.
The Southern railway has completed
laying a number of sidetracks at the
depot. The main line track has been
TP-ballasted for some distance in front
of the depot. The 'work of naintinsr
the exterior of the station has been
completed with the exception of the ob
long roof extending to the sidewalk.
A rather novel innovation will be en
joyed by those who attend the Battery
Park dance tomorrow evening. Traps
will constitute part of the orchastra
and will give much life and vigor to the
music. The addition is one seldom had
in the dances of the ipast. The invita
tion list is a long one and the event
promises to be one of the largest at
tended affairs of the year.
