Special to the Gazette.
Raleigh, Nov. 28. The state board
of canvassers today completed work
on the vote for representatives in con
gress and ascertained that all the dem
ocratic candidates were elected. Gud

was found to -be 183, the same figures
as given in a special to the Gazette
more than a -week ago.
Hon. Thomas Settle was preselit,
representing Mr. Moody. He made no
objection to the counting of the vote
or any county. Afterward he declined
to make any extended statement. He
said, however, that in his contest be
fore the house Mr. Moody would not
take advantage of technicalities, such
the omission af "Jr." from the
name of Gudger, either on the ballots
or in the election returns, but that tne
fight would be made on the merits of
the case. He expected, he said, to
show frauds in the election sufficient
to unseat Gudger. He cref erred to an
instance, where four democratic voters
had used one tax receipt to qualify
themselves for voting.

Cullom called on the president this

theory held by Cullom and others who
believe it is unnecessary to negotiate
a treaty 'with Colombia is based on the-
belief that the United States will ac

RAILROAD PASSENGERS CAN
FIND OUT ABOUT TRAINS
Big
Placards Placed on the Trains
Give Full Information.
It 'will not be the- fault of the South
ern railroad in the future if persons
miss their trains at the passenger
station a Asheville.
Large "sheetiron signs with black
background and flashing gold letters aiv
now on hand to assist the passenger
in finding his train. The- signs are
hung on every incoming and outgoing
train between the sleeper and the first
class coach. Immediately on the ar
rival of a train the colored depot por
ter takes the proper sign from the
rack and places it on the train. This
sign bears as much information about
the train on which it hangs as a con
ductor could erive if he talked a half
hour.
The signs got here yesterday morn
ing from Spencer, where the South
ern's supply quarters for the Asheville
division are located.
For convenience and accommodation
to the traveling public this inexpensive
and ismple innovation of marking
trains is the most commendable thing
done by the company for some time.
TO EXTEND THE
LIMITS OF ASHEVILLE
It is nuite Drobable that Asheville's
city limits will be extended at no very
distant date. City Attorney .Bourne
has in course of preparation a draft
of Rmpnriments to the city's charter
looking to this end.
It was stated by a member of the
board of aldermen yesterday that one
of the amendments being drafted, if
accepted by the legislature, would give
the city the privilege of voting on the
extension of the city's limits.
If a vote to enlarge the city's area
were taken it is quite likely that those
in favor of the move would be vic
torious. The added receipts to the
city would be of great help and the
population increased. The citizens of
some of the suburtos would probably
fight the measure, but all depends up
on the work of the legislature.

PRESIDENT MEETS
Washington, Nov. 28.-The president
today received the members of the Car
lisle football team who yesterday de
feated Georgetown, and was full of the
subject. He expressed delight at meet
ing the members of the team and shook
hands with each. He talked football
to all of them. Nearly every one was
asked what his tribe was. There was
one player whose Indian name was
Bear. President grasped his hand
warmly and said he was well acquaint
ed with bear family. He added, "I met
one in Mississippi and I know "Baer"
of the Reading Coal company. He is
harder to catch than any of them. I'm
glad you are not one of the bears I
chased in Mississippi." To Exendine.
a full blooded Esquimaux, one of the
players, he said, "So you are an Esqui
maux. I don't suppose the coal famine
worries you a bit." Before the Indians
came the president had many callers
to whom he talked football. There was
more football talk at the cabinet meet
meeting. 3AR8ARITIES OF

Horrible Cruelties Being Practiced on
Christian Peasants.
London, Nov. 28. Advices from
Constantinople tell of the horrible bar
Darity practiced oy rurkish officials in
suppressing the revolutionary spirit
among Christian peasants. The basti
nado is a favorite form of punishment
and rt is so brutally used as to make
pulp of the feet of the victims.
Others are suspended by the feet
while boiling hot eggs are placed in
their armpits. Robbery and rape by
the soldiers are frequent.
SECRETLY MARRIED
New York, Nov. 28. Florence Burns,
the young Brooklyn woman who was
accused and later exonerated of the
murder of her sweetheart, Walter
Brooks, in a hotel in this city some
months ago, was married last week
to Charles Wildrick. The marriage
was kept a secret until today.
Wildrick is a son of Lieutenant
Colonel Wrildrick, U. S. A.,x who die'd
in 1894.
He was arrested last April, charged
with passing a bad check at the Hotel
Girard, where he had been accom
panied by Miss Mabel Strong, a
wealthy young woman of Cleveland. .
Miss Strong's father came from
Cleveland for her, but she would not
leave while Wildrick was in prison,
and she was removed to St. Luke's
hospital, where she died shortly after
wards of quick consumption.

CUBAN TREATY
MAY BE RATIFIED
Havana. Nov. 28. If the' Cuban reci
procity now proposed concedes a 25
per cent, reduction in. the tariff there
is a strong probability of its accept

United States. This leaves only the
question of the amount of reduction
of the United States tariff.
If the proposed 20 per cent, is in
