Washington, Dec. 8. nie house to day raid a remarkable tribute to th memory of former Speaker .Thomas B. Reed. . His death . had created a pro found impression, and there was a universal desire among the members that ,the house show a signal mark of respect to hia memory. For the house to take action oh the death of a for mer member had only three prece dents in its history, namely, on the oc casion of the death of Benton, Blaine, and Alexander Stephens, when the house adopted resolutions and ad journed out of respect to their memo ries. It was decided to follow these precedents in the case of Mr. Reed. The chaplain, at the opening of the session, made -a feeling reference to the death of the ex-speaker. No bus iness was transacted beyond the for mal reading of two messages from the (president andan arrangement to postpone the special order for today the London dock bill, until tomorrow. Mr. Sherman (N. Y.) then, amid pro found silence, arose and in a lew feel ing remarks, offered the following res olution: "Resolved, That the following min ute be spread upon the" record of the i nouse oi representatives: a "Hon. Guarded by the police, Pietro Mascagni, the Italian music composer, has come to New York and given a concert at the Her ald Square theatre. Among the inci dents that marked the company's short visit to New York were a march down Fifth avenue surrounded by 50 policemen and detectives in "plain clothes to protect the Italian artists from bodily harm, a performance un der the protection of the police, a strike of the musicians for back pay and a second strike for pay for the night's concert; and, as a slight al leviation to the wounded spirit of the master, a presentation to Masdagni of a gold watch fob from his company in honor of his birthday. Just why Mascagni and his com pany needed such thorough police pro tection does not appear, although the composer's representatives say that owing to the trouble in Boston, in which he was twice arrested on civil suits, there was cause for fear that the company would suffer violence here. Anyway, Mascagni demanded protection, and it was afforded him. In Boston Masdagni had appealed to the Italian prime minister and had, ac cording to the cable report, received from that officer promise of personal interference. But in this city there was attention enough given Mascagni to meet every one's demands. After the performance, it is report ed, the company, under guard of 35 rpolicemen, went to the Twenty-third street ferry, where they departed for Jersey City, in order, it was said, that they might be out of town by 12 o'clock, and writs in civil suits could not be served. had been concluded, Speaker Hender son asked if there 'was objection to their present consideration.
