Stevens of Canton Sus tains a Crushed Thigh and Loses a Leg. Special to The Gaiette-Ncws. Canton, Sept. . C. W. Stevens, while Attempting to board a west bound passenger train at Canton yes terday afternoon, missed his footing on the step of the train and waa pull ed under the moving wheels. His left thigh'was so badly crushed that upon taking him to the Mission hospital at Asltevillo It was found necessary to amputate the leg. It seems that Mr. Stevens, with two ladies, rushed up to tlin station Just before tho train left, nut! while Mr. Stevens went Into tho ticket office to get tickets for Cyhle, tho ladles hoard ed the train. There was a large crowd standing around thu station, and when Mr. Stevens ran for the train, as It was pulling out, he berame mixed up with the crowd and missed his foot ing on the train step. Mr. Btevens Is a young man about 25 years of age, and had been living In Canton for about three years. Ills home is In Presley. W. Va. lie was employed by tho Champion Fllfre company, and worked In thu sulphite digester room. C The town of Can ton closed a deal with the Charles A Webb and company of Asheville late Saturday afternoon by which the town sold to the company, $15,000 of 8 per cent , SO year bonds, for waterworks, The bonda sold for par. The money derived from the sale of the bonds will be used to complete the gravity water system, and the sewerage sys tem of the town. V. II. Kelly, th contractor, has already opened about two miles of the four and a half nill. of pipe line neccsarv to bring the water from the Intake on ltorky branch to Canton. Total Held glOO.INIO.
