Commander Peary'a dispatch from Indian Harbor to the Associated Press gives his first expression concerning the claim of Dr. Cook that he reached the north pole almost a year prior to Peary. Commander Peary's latest tel egram Is hardly less notable thun his tirst announcement, which absorbed the attention of the entire' world. It gives concrete form to the Issues a! rea;' v vaguely outlined In scientific quarters of the authenticity of Cook's announcement and the question of priority in reaching the pole. The challenge by Peary to Cook's claim that he reached the north pole has given Impetus of a growing ten dency to regard the claims of the earlier arrival with suspicion. It covers a period up to September 1 and shows that for that time 377.552 running bales have been ginned as agalnBt 402, 229 for the same period last year. , A comparison In also made with the production for 1907 when there were ginned Hp to September 1 200.278 and With 1900. when a total to that date was 407.551. The 377.552 bales, ginned thin season were distributed an follows: Alabama 13,373; Arkansas. 303, Florid 3.544. Georgia 105,927 Louisiana 3.419, Mississippi 1,570, North Carolina 1,068. Oklahoma 1. 367, South Carolina 19,048, Tennewtee 4, Texas 227.869. These figures count round bales half bales. There were 11,137 rouml bales this year, 20.868 last year. Figures Were Expected. .New Orleans, Sept. 8. While the government census bureau's report of the bales ginned .was construed as slightly bullish, the (Inures were about what had been expected by the local trade. Following the posting of the report, the market opened 13 point up but advance over yesterday's close was attributed more to heavy apot sales and Uverpool than to report on ginning. ' Lcfelivre sustuined mortal In juries when the machine crashed to the ground. Aid waa rendered him but he died soon after. The cause of the accident remains a mystery. The machine left the ground easily and (lew around the aerodrome at a height of about 20 feet, making the turn gracefully. Sud denly without apparent reason It tilt ed sharply downwurd and propelled by the force of the motor struck the ground with groat violence. The aviator was pitched out on his head and lay unconscious umidnt the wreckage of the machine. Willing hands raised him and carried him to shed and a doctor was hastily sum moned, but notwithstanding his min istrations the aviator died within a few minutes. M. Lefebvre belonged to the new school of French avlutors, and came into prominence only a few months ago. He was a contestant at the re cent aerial competitions at Ilheimaand has been known for his daring per formances and recklessness. During one of the Khelms races he was flned 14 for reckless flying. Reveral months ago M. Lefebvre Durchased a Wright aeroplane and started at mice making a scries of successful flights near the Hague. Af ter his demonstrations In Holland M. Lufvbvra dropped out of sight for while but came back Into the arena at Khelms, where he piloted a Wright machine.
