The first will be the meeting of the State urses' convention, June X, 9 and 10. This will be followed by the meeting of the Grand lodge. Order of the Eastern Star, Juno 13. The most Im portant gathering of the summer, however, will be the North Carolina Y., June 8. Several Teachers' assembly, which convenes here June 14 for a session of four duys. Western passenger train No. 24, known as the Washington-Chattanoo ga limited, was wrecked at Seven Miles Ford, between Roanoke and Bristol last night, and twelve persons were Injured; none seriously. The sad intelligence came yester day afternoon to friends In Asheville of the death in New York of William Sidney Porter, known to literary fame as "O. Henry." The messages stated that Mr, Porter had succumbed dur ing the morning following an opera tion performed Friday. While the announcement of the death of Mr. Porter shocked and grieved his many close friends and admirers here the Information was not entirely unlock ed for. It had been known for a week or ten days that he was a very sick man, but strong hope was enter tained that the ailment was not so grave as some of his friends feared. Mr. Porter was well and favorably known in Asheville. He was known by his works all over1 the country and greatly beloved by hosts of admirer. Me was recognized a the foremost short-story writer In the country and his pen-work never failed to Interest nd entertain. He was married to Miss Sarah Coleman ot Asheville and Weavervllle a few year ago and spent last fall In Asheville and this section. He was a welcome and charming visitor to The Gazette-New office during hi stay and those con nected with the paper always delight- d In his appearance In the "shop." ; Ills Last Story. Mr. Porter was a great, blg-bralned man; a whole-souled chap; a prince. of good-fellows. He was not only a short-story writer, he was a newspa per man; a native Tar Heel; a re porter. His newspaper experincea would fill a volume. Referring with sadness to the death of Mr. Porter, Judge Thomas A. Jones yesterday. In the presence of a few friends, spoke of his last visit to Mr. Porter. Judge Jones and Mr. Porter ljad been close friends for some time. Judge Jones was In New York ten day ago and Sunday, one week before Mr. Porter' death, took dinner with his friend. He spent a most enjoyable day but painfully realized that Mr. Porter was a sick man. In fact. Judge Jones A. Mordecsi of New Orleans; Mrs. W. 8. OHley of St. Hommel. N. Y.; Bert Harding of Chillleothe, O.; Miss Pattie Parish of New York, and three ne groes. The train, it is believed, split a switch.
