Greenville & Knoxvllle road, and from reports It seems that they are getting matters shaped up. Status of Transcontinental. From .the coal fields of Tennessee to the Atlantic sea coast at South port N. C, there is now under con struction the South Atlantle Trans continental railroad. The first part of this road is to be completed be tween Knoxvllle, via Asheville to Rutherfordton. This road is operat ing under a state charter which is said to be the finest ever drafted for any railroad, and it Is largely the char ter's superiority that interested the European capitalists who agreed to furnish funds to construct this road. It is under control of the state of North Carolina, the council of state has a voice in the management of Its affairs and In them is vested the veto power, thus safeguarding the state's interests as well as that of the finan ciers. The Idea behind the construc tion and operation of the road Is to make Southport a rate basing point for North Carolina and thus secure for this state freight rates which will permit it to develop as It should. There is not a rate basing point in North Carolina, it is said, Norfolk and Charleston, but largely Norfolk, be ing the ones for this state. All the principal railroads In the state have a north-south direction, thus encour aging traffic from Virginia Into North Carolina. The Transcontinental Is aimed to reverse matters in certain particulars. When It gets to South port the Idea is that it will become a means of making Southport a port of entry, and, starting a trend of trade from east to west enable the Interior towns to get better rates. This Idea is one of Col, S. A. Jones of Waynesville, president of the Transcontinental, who has worked many years in the Interest of more equitable and just rates for this state. The counties from noxvllle to Ruther fordton have voted bonds for this road. It is understood that the Hill Inter ests are In no way Interested finan cially In the Transcontinental. If this Is so. It seems the Great Northern-Burlington proposition would be likely, if it develops, to be connected with the Oliver-Patterson, project. E. B. J. "DAVY" CROCKETT DEPOSED AS MANAGER BRISTOL CLUB The Asheville fans and those who attended the opening series of games here, especially those who paid at' tentlon to the antics and methods of "Davy" Crockett manager of the Bristol squad, will not be surprised to learn that he has been deposed as manager. The Bristol team has not been win nlng as much as President Leake of that club thought It should, and he attributed these losses to Crockett Tills decision was no sooner arrived at than the manager was relieved and W. H. Johnson of Charlotte was appointed to fill the place. Bites or stings of poisonous Insects which cause the flesh to swell should be treated with DARBY'S PROPHY LACTIC FLUID.
