Riverside park Is a more delightful place this year for children, ; picnic parties and pleasure-seekers than ever before. The resort Is delightfully cool during themornlng hours and many children are sent there to romp and to play. " Two kinds of swings have been placed at cool and convenient places about the park for the pleasure of the children and In addition a big pile of sand haa been placed beneath a cov ered shed or small house where the little folk rtay play to their hearts' content For the afternoon and early evening enjoyment' of the crowds are various forms of amusement. Including the skating ring, ' bowling alley, boating and canoeing while along the river bank have been placed long tables with bench seats for the use of picnic parties. President Finley of the Southern railway In regard to the Western : North . Carolina fair and promising his co-operation, Mr. Fin. ley states that he thinks that it is most excellent project and one that will be of great value to the entire region. . The regular pro gram was carried out, the feature of me morning Session being an address by Dr. H. Z. Cook of Knoxville, ex- prealdent of the American Optical so ciety, ' on "Dynamic .; ! Sklametry." Other short talks were made by mem bers of the society touching an vital points in the work and all were very interesting and closely followed by the membera The meeting adjourned 1 o clock. . This afternoon the delegates con vened in the final business session at o'clock. At this meeting officers will be elected, reports will be heard from the present officers and commit. tees, and the place decided upon for the next meeting. Tonight a luncheon is contemplated at the hotel. ' Opening Session, The convention held Its first meet lng yesterday afternoon : at ihe Bat tery Park and was welcomed- to the city on behalf of the mayor by Charles G. Lee in a short, well worded ad dress.' The response to this welcom lng address was made by Fred N. Day of Winston-Salem, In which he complimented the city on its beauty and rare climate, and expressed the tearty appreciation of the society for Its welcome here. Following this various reports were heard and short addresses were heard from Dr. J. W, Taylor of Greensboro, president of the society, and Dr. H. Z. Cook of Knoxville. Last night the officers and - mem. hers of the board of optometry were entertained with a luncheon at the houme of Charles H. Honess of this city and later a car ride waa tendered the whole delegation over the various lines of the city. About 35 members are attending and all report a most delightful time being Spent here.
