THE HUNTING SEASON NOW ON IN FRANCE Plenty of Game Talk of Sub stituting Brest for Havre as French Entry Port.- ! (Assoc la ted Preai Cable.) Paris, Pept . 4. Claude Caairair Perler. son of the former president of the republic, ia making a campaign in favor of substituting Brest for Havre as the French port for steamers from the United States. He admits that the inferior place held by French steamers In Atlantic traffic la due to the activities of the Germans and English In building larger and faster steamers but contends that the French could better their position by reduc ing the distance between France and New York which a change to the more westerly Brest would bring about. : The distance from Brest to Paris is considerably longer than that between Havre and Paris. Neverthe less, M. Perler declares, the inaugura tion of a series of fast express trains would notably decrease the existing train voyage and the total saving of time between Paris and New York would be at one a distinct advantage to French transatlantic traveling. The remarkable and constant trans parence of the atmosphere was the cause of the terrific heat wave in France, according to M. Deslandres. the director of the observatory of Mcudon. M. Deslandres made thta report to the Academy of Sciences He added: "This transparence, long continuing, has brought about the high temperatures. The Catholic population of Savole, forming an impressive procession of many thousands, has participated In the transfer of the ashes of Saint Francois d Sales and Saints Jeanne de Chantal. The ceremony was held at the village of Anaecy. The ashes were taken from the old convent of the Visitation where they had reposed during three centuries and placed in the new convent which the slaters of the Visitation have recently built on the heights overlooking the beautiful Lake Annecy. , Leon Cavallo. now staying at Mon- tncatinl, Switzerland, is well along In the composition of a new opera to he produced In Milan and New York. ' French hunters have cleaned their shotguns lor the annual hunting sea son opening during the closing day; of AugUBt and which this year is par ticularly alluring. Game Is abundnnL Partridge, pheasant, hare, rabbits, roebuck and oven deer have been sighted In unusual numbers In the considerable areas of woodland which In riot come under the heading of private hunting grounds. Of these private grounds there arc many. ' M. Lehaudy, the sn-called tugar king, pays $111,000 a year for the right to control the hunting In the famous forest of Fontnlnebleau. But even so, the forest is a public domain and any person who wisher may follow the Lebauriy hunts. In France hunting comes within the am bitions and reach of the masses of the people who may have a fancy for that form of sport., The only requi site after the gun and powder la a governmental permit which costs about 15. 40 yearly. Quantities of game are found with in a short distance of Paris. Invita tions are already out for the more pretentious hunts of the rich man on his private domain. In these custom dictates that the hunter shall be ac companled by two men, a valet and a guard. Sometimes there Is even a third tne gun-carrier, I The gun earrler passes the weapon to the guard who gives it In turn to he valet, who then hands it to his mas ter. This complication Is a remnant of the magnificent hunts In the early days of France, when the Joyous tu SULTAN TAKES HAREM WITH HIM ON HIS TRAVELS. -.1 v ::u cf FREE MACKNILY mult of hound and horse, and valet nnd "plqueur" rang through the court of the chateau.
