A meeting of tho OaTollpa Baseball association has been called for next Tuesday, September 26, at Charlotte, when the 1911 pennant, won by Wln-ston-Snlcm, will be duly awarded. It Is expected that other mutters per taining to tho association will come up at that time for consideration and possibly the continuance or discontin uance of the present formation of the league. It Is believed among base ball men here that there will be a new alignment next year; that the South Carolina towns now represented, or some of them at least, will be dropped and that a state league will be or Knnised. Several towns aBide from Charlotte, Greensboro and Wimrtoii Sulcm are anxious to get into a slate league ond the formation of such a league is being urged. Faces Ijarcony Clinrgp. A negro nuoned Dan Turnaga Is in jull here churged with the larceny of a number of ranges, the property of Guilford county. The larceny of the ranges was a bit unique. Turnage, who is a powerfully built negro, has served a term on the chain gang nnd it seems that while on the. gang he assisted In storing away a number of ranges that had been used at the camp durinf? the winter. The ranges were stored in a vacant house two or three miles from town and yesterday Turnnge conceived the idea of appro priating the goods to his own uko. One of the ranses, valued at many dollars was sold for 30 cents. It was luring the late afternoon that the robbery was discovered nnd a deputy sheriff and city police officer were not long In Ki-ttinK on the trail of Turn- age, lie was traced to a house in (Jreensboro and placed under arrest. After he had leen arrested he told the ofllcers the entire story. (liddcn Put blinder at (rviislMro. A. Plans are being perfected for the Greensboro Rooster train which will leave here next Wednesday morning, September 27, with three oars lilled with business men, professional men and newspaper men. The train will make stops at many idaces of from three to 60 minutes. Wednesday night will be spent at Jackson Springs and the return to Greensboro will be at 7:45 on tho evening of September 23. V THt BROOK& COME.T4 Conditions for observing Brooks' comet, tho new heavenly wanderer dis covered two months ago by W. It Brooks, tho Geneva, N. Y astrono mer, who makes a business of looking for comets, arc said to bo particularly favorable at the present time and will continue to be so for another week. Tho comet was nearest tho earth on September 17 nnd for a week there will be no moon to interfere. At present the . position of the comet in the sky is west of the merid ian nt sunset, it Is betwx-n Vega nnd the end of the Big Dipper. It is three-lifths of tho distance between these two stars from liegu. It does not set until unite lute, although it is setting earlier every i!iy. It is mov ing south and west. To the naked eye tho visitor pre sents the appearance of a haisy star and there is apparently no tail. Through a high power telescope, how ever, a -toil Is visible and this feature is distinctly shown In long exposure photographs.. Tlie length of tine till Is estimated nt 10,000,000 miles. In comparison with photographs of PHOTO BY WIUJAM HtNKV.
