Koofs and Gutters Clear of . -: ' Leaves, Etc. ' ' Now that winter Is coming on it is of course the part of wisdom to take more precaution In the matter of pre venting fires than Is necessary In the summer , time. Compared with other places Ashevtlle has' few Arcs and It is rare Indeed that there is a very destructive one. Speaking of the "Are prevention day" which has been des ignated for North Carolina, Fire Chief Wood made the following statement this morning: "Asheville has 365 fire prevention days; In that the city has a paid employe, Caleb Leonard, whoso official title is building and fire waste Inspector, who works directly under the state insurance commissioner as to the state laws. In addition to carry ing out the particular' laws of the city. His entire time Is devoted to the In pectlon of buildings and fire risks with reference to the business districts and frequent Inspections are made of the whole town." Fire Chief Wood went on to say that with the falling of leaves, which Is now beginning, the property owners, for their own protection, should see that the gutters and valleys of tho roofs are kept clear of leaves as thu is one direct cause of roof fires which are particularly disastrous where there are shingle roofs. Mr. Wood spoke highly of the work that is being done by Insurance Com mlssloncr Young and praised the efii clency with which he is carrying on the department. Monday, October 9, has been desig nated by Commissioner Young as "Fire Prevention Day" and an effort Is being made to have it observed all over the state. The fire waste in this country, says Commissioner Young, Is enormous, over $260,000,000 each year. It Is In excusable and criminal, for the bulk of it Is preventable. At the request of the convention of fire marshals of America and the na tlonal convention of Insurance com mlssloners. Fire Prevention day Is be ing named and observed In a large number of states by proclamations of governors and otherwise, and October 9 is designated, the day of the great Chicago fire. The loss by fire In North Carolina is practically $3,000, 000 annually, oyer $300 per hour, and more than one-dialf Is not covered by Insurance. ' It is said that about three fourths of this loss could be prevented by the exercise of reasonable care. . It Is certainly proper that the citizens of North Carolina should Join heartily In the observance of this day In a cam paign for the stopping of this enor mous and unnecessary waste. "On this day let the property ow ers personally examine their premises and see that all rubbish and debris iititititititititititititmtitititit H WHY WBT SHAMPOOS It ARB INJURIOUS TO HAIR. It ' ' ' H ftltltltltftltttltKBittltl(lt (Outdo to Beauty.) "Avoid wet shampoos. If you would have soft, lustrous hair and plenty of it. More or less "free alkali In sham poo mixtures robs the scalp of Its nec essary oil, and this, In a measure, causes hair to grow dull, brittle and unmanageable. "The dry shampoo Is rapidly gain ing favor because of Its cleansing and Invigorating effect on both hair and scalp. If 4 ounces either of orris root or corn meal and 4 ounces of therox are mixed together and a tablespoon- ful sprinkled over the scalp, then brushed well through and out of the hair, all traces of dust and dandruff will be removed, and the hair will take on a silken sheen and richness of color Impossible by any other meth od."
