Thomas brought out the noltit that it is not wise to force fac torles where they will not grow and prosper: at the same time he insisted that they should be encouraged to come here, and as a means of getting them, he said tourists should be well looked after for, sooner or later, they would become Industrially Interested n the section. As a result ot recent accidents In Greensboro'at railway crossings the board of commissioners have taken decisive action and on recommenda tion of A. E. Brown, commissioner of public safety, an ordinance has been adopted requiring the Southern rail way to construct gates at the Summit avenue crossing and the Washington Charleston street Crossing. It was at the Sum- 1 Charlotte mit avenue crossing this week that Mr. and Mrs. H'eftln were seriously ln Ljured, only escaping death by a mlr cle when their buggy was struck by passing train.- The ordinance fur ther provides that the railway must maintain a watchman at the West Market street crossing. ' The railroad company Is required to comply with he ordinance with 30 days. A fine of 26 for each and every violation of the ordinance is prescribed. . , Ed. Walker , of -the J. I. Case com pany left yesterday for New York In 30-horse power Case to enter the Glldden tour for. the run from New York to Jacksonville.- Mr. Walker was accompanied by three Greensboro people who will make the trip and re turn to Greensboro by rail. Mr. Wal ker will also represent the Greensboro hamber of commerce on the tour. The car is expected to reach New York Monday morning. The Glldden tourists, already 80 strong, will leave New York for the run south on the morning of October 14. Mayor J. T. Murphy has announced that the increase in the tax assessment valuation of real' and personal prop erty In Greensboro amounts to one million dollars this year over the pre vlous year. The assessment as' now made up for the city proper is nine and one-half million dollars as against eight and one-half million last year. The mayor stated thut the advance was not due to the establishment of any particular wealthy concern in the city hut rather indicates a steady, prosper ous growth of the city and a general advance of property values and Im provements to property during the past year. Six Released and Fjve Arrest-1 ed in September Mr. Gorham's Report. The report of Probation Officer Oor- ham, which was tiled last night with the board of aldermen, shows there ure now under probation In the city !t boys, who were arrested on various charges. tin September 1 there were 21 boys under probation and during the month five were arrested, making a total of :t4; but six were released from proba' tlon on account of good btihavlor, leaving iH now In hand. According to the report the officer bus attended 26 semions of police court and two sessions of juvenile court. He haa made 9 visits to the homes of the boys under probution and Investigated the surroundings wliere they live.
