Beginning today there will be a two days' session of the Woman's Mission ary union of - the Asheville presby tery at" Ora street Presbyterian church. Women from all over, west ern North Carolina will be present and a most interesting meeting Is ex pected. There' was one meeting held at 10 o'clock this morning, another at i o'clock this afternoon, and tonight at 8 o'clock an entertainment will be given at the church. The feature of this afternoon's meeting was an ad dress by Mis Shadden, a missionary to Oklahoma. At tomorrow morn ing's meeting - there will be ah ad dress by Dr. George C. Worth, medi cal missionary to China. In the even ing he will show .stereoptlcon views illustrating his work. Everybody is most cordially Invited to attend these sessions. Roberts was brought here this morning from Marshall by the sheriff .of Madison on a bench war rant issued by Judge Lane yesterday on a charge of embezzlement, which is alleged to have occurred several months ago. Roberta is the man who was arrested at Marshall last week on the charge of swindling some man In Kansas and It Is said the Kansas officials were intending to get. requis. itinn papers for him. ' There was a charge against Roberts here, however, and It will be disposed of before he can be taken to Kansas. . The friends of Roberts think he la mentally un balanced. The warrant was issued on the, affidavit . of a representative of the Illinois Surety company and was to the effect that Roberts had em bezzled $100 from the Union Mutual Life Insurance company, while he was working for that company. The Surety company bonded Roberts. The hearing is set for October 21 before Magistrate Gudger. IS T Mr. Millsaps Says About 50 Will Be Here October 24 Features of the Program. E. S. Millsaps of Statesbille, district agent of the demonstration farm work for western North Carolina, Is here to attend the Western North Carolina fair and incidentally to make arrangements fo rthe meeting of the county demonstrators from all over the state, which is to convene here October 24 for a three days' conven tion. There will be about 50 present, Mr. Phillips stated, and they come to gether to disucss their experiences and modes of procedure in their line of work. They are working under the direction of the United States depart ment of agriculture and it is expected that the pepartment will send a rep resentatlve to the meeting, which is to be held at the Bwannanoa-Berk- ley hotel. . The program has .been partly pre pared. C. R. Hudson of Ralleg, stale agricultural agent will speak on "Demonstration Farm Work." May 5 Grand Jury returned indict ment accusing McNamaras, Schmidt, Caplan, John Doe and Rlchurd Roe of nineteen murders in connection with Times explosion, and holding Mc Manlgal responsible Jointly with John J. McNamara, for attempt to wreck Llewellyn Iron . works. McNamaras arraigned. . Batl .asked. This denied May 9. . ."'t May 21 Clarence S. Darrow arrived from Chicago to become chief counsel for McNamaras. ,: Time for entering pleas deferred to July 6. July Instead of entering pleas. defense assailed Jurisdiction of Judge Bordwell denying his right to try case, and moved to quash indictments. July 12 Bordwell overruled both motions. Defense filed exceptions. McNamaras pleaded not guilty. E. Kunkln by Court The Asheville Hardware company, organized In 1897 for retail and wholesale trade, and which recently moved Its place of business from Pack square to North Main street, has gone into the hands of a receiver, Mayor J. E. Rankin having been appointed to this position yesterday by Judge Henry P. Lane. The application for a receiver was brought by the National State and City bank of Richmond as a creditor and W. R. Ellerson as a stockholder. The former Is understood to be the largest creditor of the concern, the amount due them being about $22,600. The total liabilities of the company are about $90,000, It is said, and it Is thought that the assets will fully cover this amount Mayor Rankin will assume the re ceivership at once, and If success is met with In getting good prices for the stock on hand and In collecting the debts of the company, it Is certain that very little will be lost -by the creditors.
