" Arbogast" Gudger. The wedding last night of Miss Elizabeth Arbogast and Frank Qudger at the home of the former, waB the MKgest surprise their friends have ever been given. The trip the Royal Mall Liner Atra to has just ended here from 'South' ampton by way of Colon and the West Indies was enlivened by a few storms. one waterspout, and the lashings of the talis of eight caymans, or South American crocodiles, the biggest '.of which has a longer tall than any that ever came here attached to any other reptile, If serpents don't count as tails. The Atrato got the crocodiles, or cay mans, or alligators, at Colon. They were shipped thither from the inte rior of Colombia by one of the great est of tropical animal hunters, J. D. Schmidt, who says that the big cay man Is more than 15 feet long and weighs 800 pounds. Among Its jungle shipmates are two pumas, much like our own mountain lions, six capybaraa, which are the tallest of aquatio rodents, these six be ing loftier than any ever Imported, be ing not less, Mr. Schmidt says, than I feet high: a marvelous coll of anacon das, mostly mere Infants of 10 or It feet, which may grow larger on the show bills of the circuses; three big bears, hundreds of tropical . birds, mostly of the parrot family, and the bggeat Iguana, which is an arboreal lizard, good to eat If you like lizard, that ever poked Its sluggish nose into America. This Iguana is, according to Its Importer, Louis Kuhe, the animal dealer, 8 feet long, which Is a few feet bigger than the encyclopedia ' Leave orders for engraved Invita tion and. cards at Brown Book Co. The Waterspout that Interested the passengers of tie Atrato was seen off Watllng's Isianu, about half a mile from the ship. ('apt. Hayes Bays that the base of the spoilt was about 35 feet In diameter, and that the hour glass waist of it was about 20 feet long. The total height seemed to be pretty close to 500 feet. Everybody viewed it from the ship's rail without apprehension, as Capt. Hayes doclar ed that no modern liner had anything to fear from a. upon t. He told about the habit of firing guns into water spouts to break them down, and said that he had never heard or read of case where any spout had done much damage by hitting even a sailing ship. The swift liner rould easily dodge spout, as she could travel faster on her course tha-the spout could on its course. The. passengers thanked the skipper for his .discourse, and said they preferred to see a spout half a mile off. The skipper said he would prefer to encounter a waterspout a sea than the shorcgoing variety, the tornado. . . . At tho postoffice it was stated this morning that the deposits for the pos tal savings bank are coming In about as fast as was expected. Since the in. terest rate is so low it was hardly hoped that any great number of peo pie would deposit, but the officials do expect to get deposits from people who o not and never have put their mon ey in banks. It is thought that this system will reach those who have In the past kept their money in the toes of old socks or In the clock, who have lways looked upon banks as likely to fail at . almost any time. They will doubtless realize that the "govern ment'' is behind this system and will likely be satisfied to accept a lower rate for what they consider extra safety. ;. Many people are rather secretive about their money also, and do not wish anyone to know how much mioney they have. It Is pointed out that some, even when paying bills, hide their pocketbooks and always se lect a bill as near the amount of the debt as they can. It is this class of people, too, that the officials expect to reach and it will probably result in bringing much money Into clroMation that otherwise would stay hidden.
