Buckner, secretary of the board of tratle, who was named as a. delegate to the Waterways convention which convenes in Richmond today, was not able to attend and Mr. Biickner stated that so far as he knows no one is attending from Asheville. He said. however, that the convention of the American Association for Highway Improvement meets In Richmond No vember 20, and he Is going to try ' attend this as there is a chance of getting this association to hold Its next convention in Asheville. Mr. Buckner has received a letter from Mr. Pennypacker, secretary of that organization, saying that Asheville is being favorably considered by the of ficers and it Is thought that this city stands as good a chance as any other. Another convention which the board of trade Is working to get next year is that of the National Association of Fertilizer Manufacturers. In the Jour nal of this organization, published by W. W. Brown of Atlanta, there are two pages of comment on the next place of meeting in which Asheville holds n prominent and favorable place. It is suggested that if some of the Asheville business men should write to the members of the executive committee it might help to turn their attention this way. W. W. Hubbard of Chesterton, Mil., Is the chairman and W. C. Sadler of Nishvllle is the secretary. Other members of the ex ecutive committee are Charles Ellis of Savannah. C. H. Dempwolf of York. Pa., J. B. and Charles C. Case. The McDowell county fair opens at Marion Thursday and will continue hrough Suturday. Much interest is ell here in this, as the officers of the McDowell county fair did much to help with the success of the fair here. i'he premium list is very liberal and it is said that the management has secured many excellent attractions. Rev. Dr. C. B. Waller, the new pas tor of the First Baptist church, has ented the residence on Chestnut street owned by Judge Pritchard, which was recently occupied by Dr. nl Mrs. W. M. Vines. This Is a modern dwelling house, Is one of the arettlest residences in the city, and is idmirably adapted for the use of u pastor. About 7 o'clock this morning the Ire department received a call from No. 2 Edgehill street, In the eastern oortion of the city. When the men irrlved they found that a heavy volt- ige wire had fallen on another wire xnd this caused Hushes. The wire must have been grounded somewhere, i. the horses in going through a pud dle of water were considerably shock- d. The fire did not amount to much, n fact no woodwork had caught. Mr. Collaeott of the Southern Brick ompany of Chattanooga, which has the contract for paving Charlotte street has proposed to the city authorities to pave with brick that part of College street, which is Tiow paved with Belgian blocks, at a much cheaper rate than the regular price, provided he can make a trade with the Southern railway to pave the freight yard with the blocks. Mr. Collaeott stated that there would be about 800 yards to pave, and If he were allowed the blocks, he thought the space might be paved for about $1000. The city fathers have not de elded yet whether to do this and In any event would have to await the de clslon of the Southern company, as to the paving of the freight yard. At the top of the letter Is print ed In large type "A Greater Western North Carolina" and with the Invlta Hon is the printed speech of President Flnley of the Southern railway, who delivered the principal address at the Western North Carolina banquet re cently held at the Battery Park hotel and at which the various communities were represented. It was then decided to hold an other meeting for the purpose above stated, October 24, at .the county court house. At that time the pur pose of the organization will also be discussed and a committee will report to the meeting a plan of organization and also plans for the advertising and development of the country. It is asked that the committee on arrangements be advised of the names of those who expect to attend the meeting. The Invitation are signed by the fol lowing: George S. Powell, chairman; N.
