The Asheville Methodist ministers, with the other Methodist preachers of Western North Carolina are making preparations to attend the annual conference that is to meet Wednesday in Statesville. This is the busiest lime of the year Ifor Methodist preachers. They are winding up the work of the confer ence year, preparing their many re ports and trying to go up with a clean slate so far as their collections are concerned. At the same time the stewards are doing what they can to pay the preacher." Church members are prone to put off this paying until the very last minute hut it is nearly always the case that the well established church pays up In full. The members, at east the stewards and the prominent members, take great pride In going to conference with the preacher's salary all paid, and the pastor is equally keen about his collections for various causes. It Is the same tale every year. The members are away behind in their assessments, hut somehow the money is raised. j During the ear the Methodist) churches of Asheville have been in a prosperous condition. There are foui Methodist pastors in the city and the have all done good work. With the exception of Rev. G. G. Harley, pas tor of the North Asheville church, a ho has been here three years, thf pa-stors are in their first year here. They are allowed to stay four yean at one charge and it is not expected tlmt many changes will lie made. At the Hiltmore church, -.however. itev. C. (!. Chrlstenbenj has served his full four years and will have t move. It is mere speculation to pre dict the next pastor. Of the city churches It Is said thai all the pastors will go up with gooii reports. Kev. W. A. Newell of thi Haywood street church states that hii collections will be more than twice jo n:uch us they were last year. ThU church has a membership of 66. Tht last quarterly conference will be held tonight when the finances will he set tled up. In this case no change is anticipated. Kcv. Or. C. V. llyrd has only beei, at Central church a year, havinr transferred charges with Rev. G. H Detwller, who went to Nashville Jusl before conference last-year. The last quarterly conference of this church will be held Monday night. Th members of this church are not ex pecting any change. Rev. L. T. Hitt. pastor of F.ethel church, was appointed to the work shortly after conference, when Rev Mr. Miller unaccountably disappeared from the city. It is thought that Mr Hitt will also be sent hack. He ia still a member of the Virginia conference hut if he Is sent back he can easily be transferred. The last quarterl) meeting at this church will be held tomorrow n.ht. Most of the preachers will leave Monday and Tuesday for Ktatesvllle The committees organize on Tuesdas and conference opens Wednesdaj morning. iHow Many Men Know How to Keep It at Par. The Socialist club submitted to its members a referendum vote on the time of meeting anil the result, it Is announced, showed that Tuesday night at 8 o'clock was preferable to Sunday morning. So their meetings will be held on each Tuesday night from now on. That the management of the Thea- rto and Palace theaters is wide-awake in his efforts to secure the best mov ing pictures to be had. is proved by the fact that he has made arrange ments to get the pictures shewing the world's series baseball games, which will be shown here next Monday. The Metropolitan Opera company appeared at the Auditorium last Ik lit and the performance was heard by a very few people. The work of the company deserved a much larger udience and in fact was of a high order, especially the solo work. Those ho were present, however, showed that they appreciated the concert by requent applause. One of the fea tures that was especially creditable as the singing of Miss Christine Miller. J. C.
