MICHAI.OVE, Prop. 23 Patton Ave. Phone 107. One of the most important mutters connected with the work of the West ern North Carolina Methodist confer ence, recently closed at Slatesville, was that of the educational commit tee, at whose suggestion an educa tional secretary was appointed for the purpose of raising money for the schools and colleges belonging to the conference. Kov. I. U. Abernothy was appointed to the position with a salary of $2"00 per year. That which will most interest the people of this section, however, was the fact that Weaverville college, which has a large number of sup porters in this city and community, Is to be greatly benelited in a tinancial ai the recommendation of this immittee. The committee recom mended that a fund of $140.0(10 he tised by the secretary and of this ,'eaverville is to receive $25,000. It understood that this amount is to be expended in buildings and equip ment. This report was known as Xo and In addition to this the college ill get a smaller amount from the budget. In speaking of the larger amount be raised, a prominent Methodist f the city, a former student and well- isher of Weaverville college, stated hat he had no doubt that the secre tary would be able to raise the 140,000. For a long time the conference has been considering the matter of flnanc- ng the secondary institutions, and the gentleman above referred to said that the opinion- had begun to prevail mong the members of the confer- nce that it Is time these institutions ire getting some help: and that they re doing as good work as. or prob- bly better, than the larger colleges. An educational committee has been work for a year or more on the nance problem and it held two mid- ear meetings during the past year t" consider such matters. One of these meetings was held at Durham and the other at Statesville. and at each of hem it was the consensus of opinion that It was time something is being done for the smaller institutions. people need more coal, clothes and doctors than the strong, robust and hearty.
