YOUNG "A stowaway:" I heard the words spoken by some oue near me aud, looking in the direc tion of other eyes, saw "a lad being brought forward between two sailors. He was in rags, aud wnat clothing clung to him was begrimed. The offi cer of the deck was standing by nie, and the boy was brought to him. ' "I suppose you haven't any money to pay your fare?" "Xo.slr." "Well, before you get ashore you'll wish you hadn't shipped that way. We work stowaways harder than any one else aboard this ship. We do that to keep others from doing the same thing." Then to the men who had him In charge, "Take him dowu luto the engine room and set him to shov eling coal." 'You don't mean," I protested, "that you're going to put that delicate boy down In that frightful hole at such hard work!" The man looked at me angrily. "It's against marine law for passengers to Interfere with the officers of a ship. You'd better keep your suggestions to yourself." The boy was taken below, and I saw so more of him that day. But knew what shoveling coal on an ocean liner meant, and I didn t be lieve he could stand the work. I lay awake In my berth thinking about him and the terrible fate In store for so many human beings deprived of protection while others are pampered with every luxury. There were hoys and girls on the Bhlp occupying luxu rious staterooms under the care of fond parents, so delicately nurtured that It seemed as (If a snow squall or. hot sun would i wither them. And ret this poor boy. (with the same kind of a body, the same immortal soul, must be put to work In an Iron room far under water, where the tempera ture was over 100 degrees, and made to lift heavy scoops and throw the coal In them Into the month of a fiery furnace. The neitiday I Joined a party of pas sengers who were to go through the engine-room, and, descending the suc cession of Iron steps, we filially fouud ourselves in the ship's infernal regions. went downito the furnace, and there was the boytstaggering with the rest from the coefl heaps to the mouth of the furnac. He was the only one thus engaged vflho'wore any clothing above his waist. How he stood the heat I cotild notunderstand. The sight was too much for me. I went up- to the purser's office and took a steeraceapastmge for the stowaway. then wentdown with an order permit ting me (to bring him on deck. I got him to a) berth, and as soon as he en tered it he collapsed. Possibly it was the reaction at knowing he need not work uby longer in Tartarus; possibly he wound not have stood the strain much linger anyway. I got the ship's surgeuu to bring him up, but he need ed nothing-save rest. After he had come to himself again I talked with him about himself, who he svas and' why he was trying to get to America. He told me that be was going over tot Join-a brother who would meet him In New York. The brother bad promised to send him passage money, but had been thrown out of work duping a strike, and the matter of goingfover must have been deferred had it not been for the boy's determi nation to cross as a stowaway. The (youngster was very grateful to me for what I did for him. As we nearett the American coast I noticed that something' was troubling him. I asked him wbatlt was, but did not get satisfaction. It was not fear of being deported, fortie expected his brother to take carerof that, though Just bow it vsas to be done he didn't ts me. He tea W finally that ho needed some better clothing before going ashore. ' His brother rwouidn't know him In his rags. At any I rate, be didn't wish to appear to himfso shabbily dressed. I offered to try to get blm something better, ibut hej declined to permit mo to do so. Then (ho asked me if L would ask, a stowarJBesB to come down and seeihim. I couldn't understand what bewanteflrof a stewardess, bat bora hi message. The dafy we reached port before go- trig ashore I went down to see my protege and bid him goodby. Then I met with th surprlse-of my life. Not seeing him,' I asked .where he was. My informsait pointed- to a girl slink ing a wy from. me. "I mean the boy I hare seen here several times the stowaway." "Thaf s the one," was the reply. I wet up to the girl and recognized her aa tbo youngster I had helped. WhatMhe bad wanted the stewardess' for wm to get her some girl's cloth ing.. -The stewardess had kept her secret! from me, but had appealed to some of the first class passengers, who bad contributed a very nice ward robe. 1 Instead) of the ragged, begrim ed boy I sawa very pretty, tastefully dressed girl. : I proposed! to see the matter out I took her ashcretat the island, and her "brother? ,was, there to receive her.
