THE MARKETS
New York, July 23. The tendency
of prices was reactlnary at the open
ing of today's stock market. Steel de
clined fractionally on the publication
of the Stanley report. Western Mary
land, Canadian Pacific, General Elec
tric, Atchison and St. Louis and San
Francisco second preferred were low
er also. Reading, Amalgamated and
Union Pacific made light gains.
Wall street devoted much of Its at
tention today to the Stanley Steel re
port. The speculative element seemed
disposed to place a bearish construc
tion on the recommendation of the
committee. Bonds were steady.
The market closed heavy. Lowest
prices and greatest stagnation were
witnessed In the last hour, with some
slight readjustment in final dealings.
Cotton Buying Movement.
New York, July 23 Cotton opened
steady today at an advance of 5 to 7
points and sold 8 to 9 points net high
er during the middle of the morning
on covering and continued support
from trade sources. Higher cables
than due and continued predictions
of a bullish August bureau report
were supposed to inspire the buying
mo vent tit.
The market continued quiet late In
the afternoon, but remained steady 6
7 points net higher.
The weekly report of the weather
bureau was without any influence on
the cotton market and trading con
tinued quiet during the afternoon with
prices ruling B to C points net higher.
The market closed steady. ,
