He had a good head, fine physique, porfect manners, was a most Interesting per sonality, and bore himself with the distinguished air of a gentleman. His linen was Immaculate and his clothes faultless as to cut and material. But all the pleasant first Impression was ruined when I discovered the collar and shoulders of his dresseoat covered with loose hair and flakes of dandruff. To me this was an Indication of personal carelessness, not to say un cleanllnesa, 1 wanted to tell him to Ret a bottle of Newbro's Hcrplclde. This remarkable remedy would. In a Bhort time remove every trace of dan druff from his head, stop his hnlr from falling and prevent him from becom ing bald. I don't like baldheaded men; they look old whether they are or not. Dandruff Is caused by a germ and Newbro's Ileroiclde kills that germ. Tho Itching, which Is so frightful with dandruff stops almost Instantly. Hcrplclde is the Original Hemedy thitt destroys dandruff.' There Is noth ng In the world Just like It, nothing that Is "Just as good." Sir Charles Napier, was once delight fully pictured In Punch as setting out for Sclnde with "his soap" and very little besides. De Latocnaye, a Breton emigre of 1796, who traveled In Ire land, chiefly on foot and Invariably turned tip at the houses of his friends with almost no visible baggage, car ried nearly as simple an outfit. 1'et in some mysterious way be was always able to appear at dinner In full dress. In his book "Promenade "en Irlande" De Latocnaye tells how he accomplish ed the feat: - "I had my hair powder in a bag made of a lndy's glove. My razor, needles, thread, scissors and a comb all went Into a pair of dancing pumps. In ad dition, I carried two pairs of silk stock ings, breeches of such fine stuff that they would fold up as small as my fist, three cravats, two very fine shirts. three pocket handkerchiefs and a dress coat with sis pockets. "Three of these pockets I kept for letters, portfolio, and so forth; In the others, whenever I was going to call at a decent house, I stowed away my be longings, wUch trere packed some in the pumps, the rest in one of the pairs of stocking! . "At other times," he concludes, with more than French vivacity, "I tied the three parcels in a handkerchief nnd carried them at the end of my walking stick, on which I had managed, to fix an umbrella." Thus equipped he stayed at Lord Kenmare's for a week, at Uazelwood and at Florence Court for the same length of time, at Lord Alfcimont's and Ballynahlnch for longer still, no doubt to the astonishment of housemaids as well ns of hosts. But he was never disturbed by his lack of luggage and steadily refused all proffered loans of clothing. By the time De Latocnaye got to SII go the weather bad broken, and he was obliged to add a spencer to his wardrobe. MAGIC FIRE WRITING. How to Parform an Amusing and Mys tifying Trick. This recipe for "magic Bre writing' Is given by the TathGnder: Dissolve saltpeter In water until the water will take ud no more. Then take the "wrong" end of a penholder and, dip ping It In the solution, draw In thick strokes some name' or design on a piece of light paper, taking care not to break the continuity of the writlug anywhere that is, all words must be Joined. When dry the writing win lie Invisible. Fold over or roll np half an inch of each end of such a paper after It has been allowed to get dry and stand It on something that will not burn. Light a match, then blow It out and apply the glowing tip to some spot touched by the design (you can make an Ink mark before apply Ing the saltpeter to serve as a guide), and a tiny glowworm of Are will travel -ill along the lines traced and end by leaving the device burned out of the paper, no other part of It being destroyed. By the use of a little Ingenuity all sorts of omuslng designs for this pur pose can be got op. For example, you con draw Id pencil or ink on the paper a picture of one boy throwing a base ball to another and also trace an m visible curved line In the saltpeter from the hand of the thrower, to that of the catcher. Then wheD you touch fire to the thrower's band the Ore will follow the saltpeter line right to the other's hand. Those who see the thing and are not In the secret will be much mystified as to why the fire follows this line and dMs not burn the rest of the paper. Saltpeter enters Into gunpowder, and wherever It has touched the paper It makes It burn. Visitors stop at the Thocn! Many ac tive Issues were lower, however, with weakness greatest In Canadian Paci fic, Louisville and Nashville and steel. Cotton opened steady today at a decline of 2 to 5 points under realizing and local sell ing Inspired by lower cables than due and reports of showers in some east ern belt sections which have been complaining of dry weather. Texas advices Indicated a more active de mand from spot shorts and deterior ation of the crop outlook and the market became very firm shortly af ter the call on a renewal of yester day's buying movement with prices selling about 8 to 11 points net high er. Trading was more than ordinar ily active for a half holiday and real Izing was very heavy on the advance to within S or 4 points of yesterday'B high level, but there was an active buying movement for both accounts and the market was practically at Its best point in the middle morning.
