Weaver and Burgin Patton, against
whom the bull moose had concentrat-
d their efforts, were in no danger
whatever, and would have handsome
majorities.
The bull moose headquarters had

sought tho republican congressional
headquarters. Neither the bull moose
of the county nor the republican con
gressional management had any in

It was about an even break for the

Long before the polls had closed: in
the afternoon t'.-.e democrats had as
sumed an attitude of certain confi
dence and all Indications pointed to
another democratic victory in the
county. The day went to the demo
crats largely by default, as the pro
gressives had little organization to aid
them. However, there had been a
small element of fear injected in the
prospects with reference to one or
two of tho candidates and the demo
crats worked during the whole day
with vigor and effectiveness.
It was also evident that Simmons
had carried the county in the senator
ial primary by about tho majority
which his managers had figured, over
his two opponents, but ono of the
surprises of the campaign was the
race made by Judge Clark. -
Taft's Strength.
Another surprises of the campaign!
was the number of votes cast th3 for
tho Taft administration. In part this
was due to the uncertainty that pre
vailed in some quarters with reference
to the proposed fusion of the republi
cans and progressives. It was also
due to the hard work done by the
Settle supporters. There were few
who were working for Meares, and
Taft profited by tho work done for
Settle. Settle received the votes of a
great many bull moose, too, that voted
for Roosevelt, who did not show the
strength which some had expected.
Gudger was not scratched to the ex
tent that had been predicted, by some
in fact, not to any appreciable extent.
Craig received the votes of a good
many republicans and bull moose, and
on the other hand Settle was support
ed by many wet democrats.
Absence of Bribery.
This was not one of the old time
elections. It was conspicuous by the
almost entire absence of bribery.
There was presumably some little
money and whiskey UBed, but not
much. Everything was quiet and or
derly. The floating voters stood about
with looks of dejection. They were
not approached by the progressives,
and the democrats felt. that they did
not need them.
It was an Ideal day, everything was
propitious for a heavy vote, but the
people were slow in voting and there
were not so many cast as had been in
dicated by the Interest shown during
the past several weeks.
