Gilead and Raleigh One Far mer Kills Another. At a meeting yesterday afternoon at the City hall an association was organized for the promotion of a new public hospital, the plans for the pro motion of which were given in yester day's Gazette-News. Officers were elected and details of the campaign to be waged for funds were discussed. Tile following officers were chosi'n: S. Lipinsky, president; Judge Junius G. Adams, vice president; Dr. Paul H. Ringer, secretary; C. W. Brown, treas urer. The president was instructed to appoint the necessary committees anil he will probably have them named by an adjourned meeting to be held ihls afternoon. Mayor J. E. Rankin presided at the meeting yesterday until the; officers were elested. Mr. Hoffsommer, who is to conduct the short term cam paign for the $100,000 to- build the new hospital, explained how this would be done. He said he expected to begin the campaign during the early part of August and that it must be finished within ten dis; that 400 people, both old and young, men and women, would work In the campaign. There was much enthusiasm ex pressed over the prospects for the new institution. A temporary finance com mittee was appointed to raise $1000 for organization expenses, and there was also a committee appointed to select headquarters. Raleigh, July l.-A total of 105 miles of new and old railway was thrown open to traffic today when the first train over the Raleigh. Charlotte '& Southern left Mt. Gilead for Ral eigh. By October it is expected that , the entire line between Raleigh and Charlotte will be in operation. I A number of Raleigh people left i yesterday afternoon for points on the i new line to take the first regular train I into this city. The schedules are such ias to afford reasonable time for per sons all the way to Aberdeen to shop In this city and return home that day. A party of Norfolk Southern offi cials. Including Vice-President Dun can, General Superintendent White and others Inspected the road bed pre paratory to the first train today. Governor Locke Craig will again take up his residence in Raleigh on the evening of July 4. He Is billed to speak at Guilford Battleground on that date, and will come on to Raleigh from there. His health has been much Improved by the sojourn in Asheville. Governor Craig has extended the reprieve of Claud Blackwell, convict- ' ed in Mecklenburg county of killing Dr. Fred Melsenheimer and sentenced to two years in the penitentiary, un til August 1 so that the lawyers mak ing application for a pardon might have time to prepare their papers. News has been received in the city announcing the Illness of former Lieutenant Governor R. A. Doughton of Sparta, who is suffering from ty- I phoid fever, it is reported. News has been received In the city of a tragedy in Barton's creek town ship Saturday, when Jim Glenn, a . white farmer, was killed by Henry Jenkins, Glenn using a shovel. Three very heavy sentences were imposea on Alf. Snyder, Homer McGee and I Melvln Whltaon, who were given 16 months each on the roads for the lar ceny of harness and a chicken from Judge J. C. Pritchard. The police re covered the property several days ago and only recently found out to whom it belonged.
