Of course you have heard of A No. I, for during his day he was said to have been the moat famous of all tramps.' lie was a pro fessional "hobo", the $ very highest "bo" of them all. C. E. Sprakllen of New York was in Ashevllle Thursday finding out what he fould of the doings of A No. 1 during his Visits to this city, and he says that he has been commissioned by: a publishing ' house to write the story of the life of A No. 1. Where ever this gentleman of the road stopp ed he always left a peculiar mark, one by which he could be followed over the country. - Two of these mams are in .flbheville, one Just In side the entrance to the .Brown build- j ing on Pack square and the other In the general entrance to the Southern passenger -station.. A No. 1 visited Asehville at least twice during hia day and was well known by the newspaper men of this city, as he always made It a point to visit the newspaper offices of the cit ies where he stopped. He was a man of about SO years of age apparently and possessed a. high degree of in telligence. Upon arriving In a town, it was a custom of his to change his road" clothes for those of a higher grade , and he presented the appear ance of a successful business man. It is said that his home was originally in New York and that his people were prominent In the business world He was a Jew and always refused to tell what his right name was. Even the man who Is to write the story of his life does . not know his real name, fori A No. 1 always kept his boyhood days covered ip. After traveling for thousands of miles on every railroad system In the United States and rjever meeting t 1th an accident, .A No.' 1 was killed in a wreck In Texas about two years ago and buried in San Antonio. ' Mr. Sprakllen says that the only' Inscription on his monument is, "Here lies A No. 1, a man who never paid a railroad fare in his life, although he traveled more than any other ; liv ing man. He had no enemy", It Js said that A Vo. 1 and Jack London were pals in the old days when the famous author was a gen tleman of the -road and In his-book "The Road," London refers to this friendship and pays a glowing trib ute to A No. 1. A No. 1 had wanderlust, as , per. haps few.' other men have ever had It and he seemed to be happiest when going from one city to another and always by means of the "rods" or the "blind baggage". ,.
