Just now as the war clouds are thickening over the United States and Mexico and the past is forgotten for the moment in contemplation of the developments of the present situation, there comes a faint whisper of that terrible conflict of the states of 50 years ago. Congressman James M. Gudger, Jr., is in receipt of a letter from Capt. Jedediah C. Paine of Shawnee, Pa-, formerly attached to Gen. Hancock's staff, who now has in his possession a rapier that he took from the field of battle at Williamsburg, Va., on the af ternoon of May 5, 1862, and which he thinks was the possession of an offi cer of some North Carolina regiment. He is faking an attempt to find the owner, or descendants of the owner, of this relic. His letter to Congress man Gudger, which is self explana tory, follows: "Immediatedly after the close of the engagement at Williamsburg, Va., on the afternoon of May 5, 1862, I picked up from off the field where Early made his assault, a handsome sword of the rapier pattern with belt attached, that had evidently been hastily removed from some badly wounded officer. The scabbard shows indications of two glancing bullet marks, and the relic has all the ear marks of a much older period than the civil war, and should be easily identified by the owner, if he surviv ed the engagement, or by some mem ber of his family. "It is possible he may have been an officer of the Fifth North Carolina, which was one of the regiments of Early's brigade, and it has occurred to me that if that regiment was or ganized in your congressional district you might be able to suggest some way the matter could be brought to the attention of nn interested party, and thereby assist me in having the sword returned to the owner or his family, who no doubt would prize it very highly." Congressman Gudger has authoriz ed the publication of this letter in the hope that It may serve as a means of restoring the relic to its rightful owner. Most folks forget that the kidneys, like the bowels, get sluggish and clog ged and need a ftushliiK occasionally, else we have backache and dull misery in the kidney region, severe headaches, rheumatic twinges, torpid liver, acid stomach, sleeplessness and all sorts of bladder disorders. You simply must keep your kidneys active and clean, and the moment you feel an ache or pain in the kidney region, get about four ounces of Jad Salts from any good drug store here, take a tablespoonfnl in a glass of water before breakfast tor a few days and your kidneys will then act line. This famous salts is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, com bined with llthia, and is harmless to flush clogged kidneys and stimulate them to normal activity. It also neu tralizes the acids In the urine so it no longer irritates, thus ending bladder disorders. Jad Salts is harmless; inexpensive; makes a delightful effervescent lithia water drink which everybody should take now and then to keep their kid neys clean, thus avoiding seriouB com plications. A well-known local druggist says he sells lots of Jad Salts to folks who believe in overcoming kidney trouble while it is only trouble. Gudper, Jr. hus introduced a bill in the national house of representatives to hav6 a fish hatching and fish cultural sta tion established In the Tenth Congres sional district of North Carolina and that the sum of $50,000 be appro priated for the purpose of carrying out the provisions of the blM. The bill is as follows: "Be It enacted by the senate and house of representatives of the United States of America In congress assem bled, That the sum of J.IO.OOO, or so much thereof as may be necessary, be, and the same is hereby, appropriated, out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, for the es tablishment of a fish-hatching and fish-cultural station within the Tenth ( Congressional district of the state of North Carolina, Including purchase of site, construction of building and ponds, and equipment, at some suita ble point In said congressional dis trict to be selected by the United States commissioner of fish and fish eries, and the said commissioner Is hereby authorized and directed to es tablish said station as provided here in." The introduction of this bill follow ed the introduction of one by Mr. Faison of the committee on the mer chant marine and fisheries to estab lish such stations in Alabama, Ari zona, Colorado, Florida, Indiana. Illi nois, Maryland. New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas. South Carolina, Massachusetts and Washington, an appropriation of $.r)0,000 to go for the establishment of each station. The only proviso In the hill that must he complied with by the various slates Is that they au thorize the United States commission er and his agents lo conduct the sta tions in any manner that may seem best to them. The establlshfent of a hatchery In this section has long been considered a matter of Importance, and It would seem especially appropriate at this time, since the Federal government has already expended large sums In the purchase of forest areas In western North Carolina and proposes to extend still greater funds for this purpose.
