Washington, April 24. Applica tions for army commissions poured in upon the war department yesterday while senators received telegrams from men offering their services. Sen ator Ashurst stated he- had several messages from Arizonlans, and ob served that "most of them wanted positions as captains, colonels or ma jors but nobody wants to be a pri vate." Senators Jones and Thomas said they had received telegrams from men seeking to serve as privates. Senator, L,odge received a protest from the Massachusetts Federation of Churches "against war with Mexico." .Many applicants to the war depart ment are ex-sold lers men who have resigned their commissions in the regular service or who were officers in the volunteers in the Spanish war.
