Charlotte 5: Durham 4.
Special to The Gazette-News.
Charlotte, May 13. The leaders of
the league played a hard and fast
game here yesterday afternoon, which
was finally won by the locals by the
score of 5 to 4 In the eighth inning
when Frey, twlrler for the Bulls, threw
a wild ball to first and allowed two
men to score.
Each side struggled hard for the
game and three pitc hers were used by
0 the locals in order to hold the game,
0 while the Bulls put in two pitchers in
0 1 efforts to wrest the final score from
0 I the Hornets. The Hornets had things
0 I their way in the seventh, when they
were able, by a series of brilliant
plays, to push over three runs, but
this lead was promptly taken from
them by the Hornets in the next in-

SAYS JOURNALISM IS
AS SACRED AS MINISTRY
lAwrence, Kas.; May 1 3. The news
paper profession is as sacred a calling
as the ministry In the opinion of Dr.
Washington Gladden, of Columbus,
Ohio, as expressed in an address made
hefore hundreds of newspaper men
here yesterday at national conference
being conducted by the I'niversity ol
Kansas.
Other speakers on today's program
were H. F. Harrington, of the Ohio
State Journal, and Will Irwin, a maga
zine writer, A paper by Frank B.
Noyes, of Washington. D, C, president
of the Associated Press, on press asso
ciation work was read.
Dr. Gladden decried what he re
ferred to as a tendency of some news
papers toward "habits of exaggera
tion" and the exploitation of crime,
vice and scandal. He outlined four
great tasks for American Journalism:
First, to teach people to avoid exag
geration and violent speech.
Second, to resist the tendencies
which dementalize democracy and
which substitute the mob mind for
the deliberate habit.
Third, to hold the popular Judgment
firmly to the truth that character and
manhood and not money and popular
ity are the central values of human
oxistence.
Fourth, to turn the thoughts of men
more and more from the negative vir
tue of detecting and exposing the evil
to the positive virtue of discerning
and praising the good.
