But for (he rotten decision of I'm
re Van Buskirk In the first Inning
estcrday afternoon, Asheville would
avc won one of the beat games yet
layed here this season, thf contest
sating for 16 Innings. The decision
A'an Buskirk was so absolutely
nfoir that it looked for awhile as if
he angry fans would swoop down
ipon the field. Many of the old fans
tated that It was the poorest decision
hey had ever seen given in the history
hf organised baseball In this city. It
II happened in the first inning when
he Twins were at bat. Hickman, first
p, had fanned and Rollings got a hit
n ritht Held, stealing second. Bchra-
er, who followed him, filed out to
enter and Garvin then secured a hit
left, advancing Rollings to third.
hen while Roberts was at bat Garvin
nd lioliingH attempted to pull a dott
le Fteul. Oarvln started to second.
tt-ye throwing the ball to Corbett.
oMinxK had started home when Gar-
n w'pnto I second and Corbett threw
he ball bai k to Frye. who went down
n the "hist with Rollings and put him
ut. The umpire called Rollings aafe
nd while the arguments were going
m about the decision Rollings came
ack to the home plate and touched
he base. Several fans stated that
HolliiiRs told them after the game-
thai be wtis out. The decision by Van
usl: irk robbed Asheville of a victory
hat was hard earned and should have
gune to the Mountaineers by nil odds.
ot only 1 Van Btipklrk rotten In his
decisions that are close, "but on balls
and strikes It seems that he cannct
give satisfaction to the. players and
ans of either side. If Miller was a
poor article and ne was then van
BusHrk is in the same class and ougnt
to be allowed to go the way the other
one did.
Aside from the raw decision In the
rst Innimr, the game was well played
nd hard fought throughout. It devel-
petl Into a pitchers' battle at an early
stage and Watson and Ray vied with
each other for the honors of the game.
It was the tirst time Watson had been
allowed to go the entire route and
he had perfect control ithroughout,
holding the game well In hand and
demonstrating the fact that he can
pitch good, fast ball when In condi
tion. It was one of the few times
that "No-Hit" Ray had been allowed
to go the full route against Asheville.
Usually he is relieved in the early part
of the game when he Ss playing the
Mountaineers. While he gave up six
passes to. first, they did not do the
Mountaineers any great amount of
good for when the pinches came Ray
cloned down good and hard and held
the locals at his mercy. V
The only two runs made by the
locals came In the sixth and were
brought In by Welch, the High Point
High school lad, who Is doing such
wonderful work at nwnnii h.c.
Corbett on 'first and Austin on nernfid
Welch lined the ball down the right
field line for one of the prettiest hits
of the season. While he scored Cor
bett and Austin ha was thrown out at
second, when he attempted to go to
third, making the second out of the
Inning. He was followed by Iee who
was walked and then Frye filed to the
short stop., Welch Is. playing good,
conservative ball and Is holding his
own with the old heads of the team.
He has demonstrated time and again
since he has been on the local team
that he can play and there is always
something materially wrong when
Welch does not do stellar playing in
every game he goes In. "Skinnie"
Welch la some ball player and Ashe
ville will make a great mistake if he
Is allowed to go, even though he does
not go as good in the next few games
as ha has In the last.

Charlotte, May 21. Tne Hornets
made It three straight from the Capi
tals here yesterday afternoon by the
scor of to 1, before the largest
crowd evet assembled on the local
ball park. Tho attendance at the game
was 4,676 and more than 1,000 people
were turned away, being unable to
get Into the park. .This large crowd
waa due to the large number oc peopte
here to attend the Mecklenburg Dec
laration celebration.
Ledbetter for the Hornets pitched
a wonderful game and at no time did
ho allow the Capitals to get a chance
at the plate, the only core made by
the Capital being due to two errors
In 'the eighth when Wofford threw a
wild ball and Mollenkamp allowed
on0 to get by him. Ledbetter did not
allow but one hit, that secured by
Citrano In the ninth, when he laced
out a two bagger, with two men down.
He fanned nine men and the others
that faced him went out on little pop
files and grounders to the Infield.
