Asheville-Mount Mitchell Wireless Service
When I undertook the development of hotel facilities on the summit
of Mt. Mitchell I realized that It would be Imperative to establish com
munication between that point and Asheville by means of either tele
phono, telegraph or wireless, and after consideration I adopted the lat
ter as the least expensive method of maintaining such communication,
and on or about May 27th I instructed the Piedmont Electric Company to
install a suitable system. A system has been installed oft the summit,
connected with the Langren hotel of this city, but so far I have not been
able to open up communication with the mountain terminal., I deeply
regret the disappointment resulting both to myself, and the public, and
hope that continued efforts may yet result in establishing free com
munication, the consummatin of which will be duly noted In the Gazette
News. Entertainment of a comfortable nature is available at the Log Cabin
Inn on the summit, and I will be glad to make alb arrangement for the
transportation and entertainment of parties upon request.

Winston-Salem. August 6. Win
ston nosed out a hard fought and
close victory here yesterday , after
noon, when Hurry Watson pitching
for the Mountaineers had one bad In
ning, the fourth, during which the!
Twins made two runs, their only
ones and won the game by the score
or z to 1.
Watson and Kaufman battled out
one of the prettiest games of the sea
son, Wutson only allowing six well
scattered hits and Kaufman held the
Mountaineers to three hits until the
ninth inning when the visitors landed
on him for three more, but were
only able to get one score out of the
number. The Mountaineers backed
Watson with errorless support and
the fielding of the Asheville players,
especially Corbett and Howard was
the best ever. Corbett accepted sever
al of the hardest chances seen on
the local lot this season and got away
with them in good style.
In the fourth with two out Hick
man secured a single to left. Gates
walked and Chapman drove out a
scratch hit to right Mace hit the ball
for a clean drive to center and Hick
man and Gates came home. Kauf
man, Stuart and Hickman then struck
out and ended the scoring. Winston
was not able to score any more dur
ing the game although they fought
hard when a runner was on the base,
but the superb fielding of the visitors
kept down the chances to score.
Asheville's only run came In the
ninth when a batting rally was start
ed. Rickard, Clapp and Corbett each
secured singles and the bases were
full with none out. Bumb drove out a
hot liner to center which Chapman
could not get in time to throw out
Rickard who came home. While
things looked bright for the Mount
aineers, the next two batsmen, "Doc'
Watson and Frye, two of Asheville's
best hitters fanned and the game was
over.
The tabulated score follows:
Notice is hereby given that tickets up to G800, is
sued by the Asheville Pawn & Loan Office, have ex
pired. '
All unredeemed pledges accumulated during the
past 12 months will be put on sale at public 'auction be
ginning Saturday, August 8, and continuing until all
pledges are sold.
H. L. FINKELSTEIN
23-25 Biltmore Avenue
lenced a bit of the "rough tuff" that
has been pulled off in other cities of
the Carolina league here yesterday
afternoon, when In the second game
of the double bill, which was won by
Durham, the first by 2 to 1 and the
second by 8 to 1, "Wild Bill" Morrl
sette got angry at Umpire VanBus
kirk and was put out of the park by
two policemen.
It was in the second game that the
trouble started, when "Wild Bill"
went in to relieve "Chief .Myers who
was being freely batted by the Bulls.
During the fourth Inning with all the
bas'j full and only one man out My
eir was yanked and "Wild Bill" sent
in. "Little" Kelly made a slide
home on an Infield grounder and was
called out, when "Wild Bill" started
an argument because VanBuskirk had
not called the player out at flrit base.
The argument grew so heated that
Morrisette threw the ball at the um
jlre's head and he in turn fined "Wild
Bill" $10 and ordered him out of the
park; which order the twirler failed
to comply with.: .Two policemen were
called to take Morrisette out but the
fans blocked the gate and would not
allow the policemen to come through.
Dragging Morrisette with them the
officers started across the diamond
when one of the fans lnterferred and
received a bad scalp wound when the
officer struck him with his stick. The
officers had to fight their way through
the large crowd with dtfflculty. The
alTalr was one of the most disgrace
ful ever witnessed on the local lot
and will give baseball a bad name in
this city for a long time to come.
The games were two of the best
Dlaved here and McManus did the
Iron Man" stunt for Durham again
pitching and winning both games. He
and Myers worked the first and al
though the Mackmen secured 10 nils
off McManus they were unable to hit
when hits meant runs and with eight
hits to their credit the Bulls could
only make two runs.
In the second game McManus al
lowed but' four well-scattered hits,
while the four pitchers used by Mack
gave up a total of .seven. Myers
started the second game but was re
lieved In the fourth frame after he
had allowed three hits and three
runs and had the bases full with none
out. "Wild Bill," who relieved him,
gave up two hits during the two-
thirds of an inning that he worked
and then Thompson was sent to the
mound but was at once taken out and
Gingras finished the game, giving, up
three hits in three innings.
The tabulated score follows:
The game was without features and
was slow at all times. No life seem
ed to have been ejected into the game
and the players worked mechanlcal-
yt .
