The Greensboro News of today con tains the following boost", for Wes tern North Carolina, which will be read with Interest by readers of The Gazette-News throughout this section: Reports from the mountain hesorts of North Carolina gathered from re luctant home-comers of the past few weeks indicate that the resorts have enjoyed on e of the most prosperous seasons they have ever had, while he resarters have experienced one of the happiest. In the free mountain at mosphere the relief from' the city life has been ' genuine freedom and al though those returning regret to quit the mountains they do so nevertheless with renewde heart' for their vaca tions, ..v.- The automobile has iplayed a mighty part In the vacations, espec ially for those who owned their own machines and parties from all parts of the state have chosen this meth od of making the trip. In the main goM roads have been found, and these are by this time pretty gener ally distributed to the various and most popular resorts, while they have made other resorts popular that were not so easily accessible before. "The automobiles have proved time- savers for visitors to the mountains. Where resorts are located at some distance from the railwa ythe trip may now be made In something like an hour instead of the half day which formerly was required by the hacks and wagons. Automobile lines have been established to and from the re sorts remote from the railway sta tions. : "People returning are loud in their praises of the food which, in addi tion to the naturally good water and air make atrip to the North Carolina mountains so well worth while. The provisions, both by their sufficiency and their . quality, have transformed leaned persons into fat ones. "The item of food next to the ad vantages of living In the mountains, has been perhaps chiefest In making the North Carolina mountain resorts so desirable and so generally accessi ble. Chickens eggs, butter and milk may be had- at prices alarmingly low when compared with the cost of the same products In these piedmont sec. tions. "Eggs at 18 cents or less taste'as good as ggs that cost 25 or 30 cents. the same is true of the chickens which sell so low, a 15 or 20 cents chicken tasting quite as sweet and fat as one which costs 35 or 40 cents here at home. Golden putter around the sum of 20 cents is reported as unus ually splendid over hot biscuit, and because the cost is 6 or 10 cents low er per pound that here does not cause tourists to deplore the quality there for. The enrollment for the fall and winter term is now going on. Our Courses Include: , The committee In charge of Hospi tal Sunday for the Mission hospital' has Issued the following appeal in behalf of the Institution: "Our Mission hospital ought to be maintained and enlarged and equip ped for the following reasons: "First One ' hundred thousand tourists visit this section each year. They are subject to illness and acci dent. We should build for them. The fortunate ones of our tourists would be lad to aid in this great undertak ing if the matter were called to their attention. "Second Our Mission hospital is be glad to aid in this great undertak construction crews ana operating The Southern railway has made annual contributions to the hos pital. The various , railway brother hoods are invited to co-operate In securing funds in this campaign. The annual offering has felt the generosi ty of railroad men each year it has been taken. "Third There are scores of lumber mills in this mountainous region, with hundreds' of men In the woods and in the camps. Our mission hospital Is a friend to all these. The lumber men are. therefore, ready to aid Jn maintaining our present hospital and in the erection of a new one for larg er service. ' "Fourth The Mission hospital is also easily accessible to those operat ing the extensive mining Interests In Western North Carolina. "Fifth Just as Buncombe county has a health officer to devote all hie time to the general health or the county, a corps of efficient nurses for Buncombe county and for all the ru ral districts ,of Western North Caro lina would be a boon to all. Our Mis sion hospital should be the headquar ters for this new system with a resi dent head nurse. She could be kept in direct communication with' the rural nurses and benefits of the hospital would thus be extended to every nook and corner In Western North Carolina and the hospital Influences would serve as a preventive agency as well as bringing about the cure of dis eases .'i "Sixth If the Mission- hospital were more largely equipped the In come would be larger in proportion and more people would in turn be blessed by Its ministrations. "Seventh In addition to adequate equipment, it is some one's privilege and duty to) endow the institution so as to place It -on a solid basis. Al ready there are on Its register names from many states in the union and frequent patients from Between Salis bury and Murphy. "Whoevor contributes to the Mis sion hospital will do Infinite service to many thousands from all parts ot the country. In short, our Mission hospital should be one of the attrac tions In Asheville, a place for the In spection of tourists, a model In every way, an educational agency xor an comers. ' , "It Is perfectly reasonable, there fore, to Invite contributions from ev ery cltisen, whether he be resident or visitor." ... - Gazette-News Bureau, " 1 Wyatt Building, Washington, Aug. 28 Representative Doughton said today that he does not believe that the Eu ropean war will make it necessary for this government to levy a tax on any commodity in order to get enough funds to run the government, but should It become necessary to levy a tax he is against taxing tobacco, which is already greatly handicapped. Mr. Doughton has a novel idea and one that would bring in a large revenue, If put Into active use. He thinks thea ter and baseball tickets and soft drinks, such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, etc, should be taxed, if It is found necessary to levy any tax at all. ' Mr., Doughton said that he believed by rigid economy, the revenues of the government would be sufficient to meet the requirements. "In the place of collecting more money and disturbing business by additional taxes," said Mr. Doughton, "we should, if possible, ex pend less money. If, however, it found Impossible to save enough in this way, he states that we should And some other way than increasing th tax on tobacco, as that commodity and the men who produce it, are already bearing their full share of the burden of the government. Any additional tax on tobacco, would, in my opinion be unwise and I am opposed to It, "If we must have additional revenue by new methods of taxation, beer one object that can stand an Increase, Also, It seems to me, that a smal tax should be placed on soft drinks, such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, etc., also chewing gum, theater tickets and baseball tickets. In this way, certain a sufficient an ount could be raised to meet any needs that may arise. I re peat again that I shall vigorously op pose any additional tax on tobacco, Telegraphy 'Multlgraphlng Commercial Law Business English, eta Stenography Touch Typewriting Bookkeeping Btenotypy ' EMANUEL BUSINESS COLLEGE, Ws Patton Avenue. rnoNE iioo.
