The board of directors of the Ashevillo Ketail Merchants association several days ago unanimously decided that all stores belonging to the association, and they are greatly in the majority, shall close their doors Monday. Banks, and other institutions will likewise ob serve the day. The street railway management has assured the committee from the Cen tral Labor union that everything pos sible will be done to make their day at Riverside park a complete success. With every car available in service from early In the morning until late at night, there should not be any delay in handling the enormous crowds ex pected to go ot Riverside park. . Here Is a picturesque glimpse of Stevenson's whimsical attire as given In the "Collected Essays of Edmund Oosse:' "Stevenson was not without a good deal of Innocent oddity In bis dresa When I try to conjure up bis figure I can only see a slight, lean lad in a suit of blue sea cloth, a black shirt and wisp of yellow carpet that did duty for a necktie. This was long bis at tire, persevered In to tbe anguish of his more conventional acquaintances I have a ludicrous memory of going In 1878 to buy hint a new hat. In com pany with Mr. Lang, the thing then upon bis bead baring lost the sem blance of a buman article of dress."
