FOUR SOUTHERNERS
ON. RAILWAY BOARD
Southern Railway Now Has
Majority of Southern Men
on Board of Directors.
County Engineer C. H. Neal has
Surveyed Route for Pro
posed Highway.
If the plans of the residents of
Chunn's cove and the board of county
commissioners are carried out, l!un
cembe county will add another soenlo
road to the al.-endy long list In this
county. Residents of Chunn's cove
recently petitioned the board to have
a road laid out In the cove and today
County P.oad Engineer Charles H.
Neal has been laying out this proposed
road.
The new road will follow the old
roadbed fruin Ueaucitcher gap to con
nect with the road built by R. H.
Holland at the head of Chunn's rove.
If carried out according to the plans.
th? road will form a loop around
Chunn's cove that will make It one
of the most beautiful, from a aeen'.n
point of view, that can be found any
where in this mountain section. It
will come bark around the cove by
way of the old Overlook park and it
Is stated that at no place on the road
will the grade be more than five and
one-half per cent.
The mailer securing auch a road
haj been agitated by the residents of
the cove for some time, but is the first
time that the proposition has reached
the stage where the road has been laid
out by the county engineer. It in be
lieved that the road will be- built at
an early date and will be ready for
travel.
At the regular mid-monthly meet
ing of the board of county commis
sioiitra, to be held r.i-xt :'..Uurday ih.
committee recei.ny uppomted Ly v;.c
bi urd to ci: eriiso for bids for the
construction of the 'Adiovilii-Yv taver
ville highway will mei't with the board
and the bids that are submitted on
that day will be opened. It is highly
probable that a contract will be let
nexf Saturday for the rebuilding of
the highway.
County Engineer Ch -tries H, Neal
stated today that from the numerous
inquiries that he has received from
firms in all sections of the cotm'ry,
calling for specifications, he thoosht
that the board would receive a large
number, of bids at the meeting next
Saturday.
The rail for the bids includes all
kinds of material and It is understood
that bids will be submitted for at
least six different kinds of surfacing
for the highway.
If the contract for the construction
of the highway is let next Saturday,
it is understood that the county will
proceed at once with building a four
inch macadam base for the road, so
that the road can be used during the
winter by the people who travel over
it, and the w rk of surfacing it will
be started In early spring.
Division Passenger James II. Wood.
of the Southern railway received the
following important telegram this
morning from TUchmond, which will
prove of general interest throughout
the entire south, as well as in Ashe-
ville and western North Carolina:
'Dr. Edwin A. Alderman, president
of the University of Virginia: John
Kerr Franeh, -bat! kef ot .Richmond;
Dr. John C. Kllgo of Durham,-bishop
of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
South: Robert Jemison of Birmingham
and Charles Steele of New York were i
today elected directors of the South-1
ern Railway company, thus making
a majority of the board southern men
and fulfillim the hope expressed by
President Fairfax Harrison in his first
address before a southern audience
when, at Chattanooga on January 20,
last, he said: -
" 'I look forward to the time when
there may be more southern men on
our board of directors.'
"Mr. Steele succeeds himself, the
four new directors filling vacancies
caused by the death of W. W. Finley
and H. C. Fahnostock, the reslgnntlon'
of George F. Haker, Jr., of New York
and the declination of Judne E. II.
Gary of New York to accept re-election.
"Judge Gary, who is chairman of
the board of the United States Steel
corporation, and Mr. Haker, '-who. Is
allied with a number of other corpor
ations, are retiring from the board of
directors of the Southern railway
largely in deference to public opinion
of the present day in regard to inter
locking directo Vs. despite the fact
that both have been active and useful
members of the Southern board.
"Today's meeting- of the stockhold
ers of the Southern railway was the
first at which they have had the op
portunity to directly take a hand in
the management of its affairs and the
election of directors, the voting trust,
which hns been in control since the
organization of the company in 1894,
now being in proress of dissolution.
"A large number of stockholders
attended the meeting in . person and
over 90 per crnt of the total vip!iih
zntton v-ts r'-yescnied. The- meeting
was open to tti" uiD"t nnu m"re. was
full and frank discussion of the report
covering the operations of the com
pany for the tiscal year ending June
30 and of the recently accomplished
financing,' before approval wiis voted
"A number of directors and the
principal oliicers were in attendance
and answered questions askea oy
stockholders touching the manage
ment of the property and gave nil in

affairs of the company and the prog
