If It has never been recognised as the month of conventions It will be permanently on the calendar after the events of next week in Ashevllle, Six gatherings are on the program from June 16 to 19, and at least one other large meeting will occur later in this month. Repre sentative men In the commercial, municipal and religious worlds will gather here for the exchange of ideas and discussions of vital importance to the interests they have at heart. Elaborate preparations have been made to render the approaching gatherings pleasant and instructive. The officers of the city government, the board of trade, the Merchants' as sociation, the pastor and officers of the First Baptist church and other organlatlons of the city have co-operated In the' plans for the entertain ment of the bodies that will be guests of the mountain metropolis next week A list of the associations and con ferences that will be here during the week is as follows: North Carolina Merchants' association, Tuesday to Thursday; North Carolina Stationers' association, Tuesday; Southern News paper Publishers' association, Sunday to Tuesday; Second Summer Bible conference, Friday to Monday, June 28; Tri-State Water and Light asso ciation, Wednesday to Saturday; Caro lina Municipal association, Thursday and Friday. WATER AND LIGHT MEN WEDNESDAY Many Mayors of This State Will Gather Here Thursday NEWSPAPER PUBLISHERS SUNDAY Editors and Owners From Sou thern States to Meet at Grove Park Inn. Meeting for the first time in west ern North Carolina, it is expected that the Carolina Municipal association, which will convene here on June 17 for sessions lasting two days, will be one of tho most Important meetings of the association held since Its or ganization. The program arranged by the com mittee, consisting of ex-Mayor Charles Bland of Charlotte, chairman; Mayor Thomas J. Murphy of Greens boro and ex-Mayor O. P. Shell of Dunn, is considered to be the most at tractive yet tried for a convention by the association. The association will convene at the Battery Park hotel and next Thurs day morning at 10 o'clock and Rev. Dr. C B. Wallerapastor of the First Baptist church will deliver the invo cation. The address of welcome will be made bv Mayor J. E. Rankin and ex-Mayor Charles A. Bland of Char. lotte will respond. Dr. Carl V, Key nolds, city health officer, will deliver an address during the first morning of the convention,, his subject being, Vlty Health Problems." The Carolina Municipal association was organized two years ago and the last meeting was held in Charlotte. A feature of that meeting was a mam moth street parade, in which hun dreds of floats took part, each repre senting the commercial life of the city. South Carolina Mayors to Attena, The meeting of the Southern News paper Publishers' association, which convenes at Qrove Park Inn on Bun- day, June 13, for sessions lasting through Tuesday night, will bring to this city editors and owners of news papers in practically all the . south em cities. The convention here next week will be the twelfth annual meeting of the association. The last convention was held at Atlanta on March 16 and IT, 1914. Many matters of Importance to the southern newspapermen were transacted at the last meeting and in formation received here is to the ef fect that the approaching meeting will see discussions of subjects of great importance to the members of of the association. The association is composed of edl- itors, managing editors and owners of newspaper in the south, there being about 118 memtx ru of the association at present. It was stated at Orove Park Inn today that at least 108 of these members were expected to be present at the meetings here. While the newspapermen Will 1Ib. cuss many matters of great Impor tance to them, not all of their time will be taken up with business, for several features of a social nature have been planned for them. The Ashevllle Citizen and The Gazette- News will give the members of the as. soclation an automobile ride over the cltv and surrounding mountains on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday after noon tho editors will again be the KUrsts of the local newspapermen and will be gtvn an automobile ride through the Blltmore estate. The Grove Park Inn will give banquet Monday night to the editors Not only will the mayors of North I Carolina cities be present at the meet ing of tho association here, but invi tations have been extended to mayors of many of the cities of South Caro lina and it is expected that several of them will be in attendance in this city. The city heads will not devote all of their time to matters of serious na ture, for on Friday night, June 18, the last night of the convention, the management of the Kattery Park ho tel will give a dance complimentary to the members of the association, their wives and daughters. Then on the two days the mayors are in the city there will be league baseball games here, the Mountaineers taking on the Charlotte Hornets and it is expected that the mayors will visit Oates park in large numbers. It is thought that at least 100 mem bers of the association will be in at tendance here during the two days the association Is in session. The fifth annual convention of the Tri-State Water and Light associa tions of the Carolinas and Georgia will meet in Asheville, June 16 to 19. This is the first time this association has ever met In this section and it is expected that the convention will draw many members from the states it represents. The officers of the association are: F. C. Wyse, president; J. W. Neave, L. H. Hill and E. M. Anderson, vice presidents, while J. G. Barnwell is secretary-treasurer. The local enter tainment committee is composed of J, B, Rector, chairman; Rev. Wyatt Brown, J. H. Wood, E. E. Galer and J. D. Earle. The association will meet at the Langren hotel and arrangements have been made for the holding of the busl ness sessions in the large assembly room on the top floor of this hotel, Organized In 1911. The association was organied in Co lumbia in June, 1911, and there were 40 members at the first meeting. The first charter member of the associa tion was W. H. Gibbs, at that time mayor of Columbia. The membership is now well above the E50 mark It is stated, and is growing all the time. It Is believed that more members will be present for tho meeting here next week than the association has ever been able to draw since its organia-tion. A large number of Ashevllle men are on the program for the meeting, N. Buckener being master of cere monies at the opening session, which will be held at 3:30 o'clock on the afternoon of June 16, at the Langren hotel. Muslo for the convention will be made by the Langren hotel orches tra. Following a musical selection by the orchestra, Rev. Wyatt Brown, rec tor Trinity Episcopal church, will open the convention with prayer, after which Mayor J. E. Rankin will deliver an address of welcome. He will be followed by W. Vance Brown, presi dent of the board of trade, who will also give an address of welcome. The response will be made by J. W. Neave, superintendent of the Salis bury waterworks. Object of Association. The object of the association, as given in the phamplets of the conven tion. Is the advancement of knowledge of public water and light supply, furnished either by public or private ownership, and the management of waterworks and light departments; the exchange of information pertain ing to the management of waterworks and water supply, for the mutual ad vancemept of the Interests of con sumers and supplier:, and for the pur pose of securing economy and uni formity in operation; the establish ment and maintenance of a spirit of fraternity among its members by so clal Intercourse, and friendly ex change of information an 1 experience.
