Given 18 Months On Charges of Assaulting a Young White GirL Asheville As it Was Twenty-Nine Years Ago Anniversary Ball at Battery Park Hotel Stirs up Recollec , tions of Early Days Stage Coach Stuck in Mud on Bilt more Avenue. . Twenty-nine years ago yesterday C. H, Southwick, now a resident of West Asheville, opened the Battery Park hotel as its first proprietor. Among those who partook of the first dinner served in, tho hostelry that was to become known as, at that time, the finest in tho south was : Peter P. Yatc of Greensboro. Last j night at the anniversary dinner ana ball given by the management of the famous Inn Mr. Southwick and Mr. Yates formed two at a dinner party. The" other members of the party were Mrs. Betts and Miss Carrie Wagner. This anniversary occasion brings UP many reflections on conditions in Asheville when this hotel was first opened to the public. This morning Major F. N . Waddell talked in a very entertaining way of his recol-1 lections of the city at that time. , Major Waddell came to the village (it could not then be called more than that) on the stage coach line Into the city from Old Fort through the Swannanoa Gap, connecting here with the highways that led out North Main street into Tennessee and clown i tlie then South Main street to Green ville and Spartanburg. The railroad had not then been constructed across the Blue Ridge. The population then was about 7,000. Today Asheville has 35 miles of paved streets. When Major Wadilell entered the town on his first trip the atage coach mired down, he says, in the mud at a point near Mrs. Hll liard'a residence and one horse broke a single-tree in efforts to escape from the mud. There were at that time no paved streets or paved sidewalks in the village. Stepping stones at the crossings encouraged pedestrians to attempt a crossing without putting on life preservers. And when Major Waddell became chief of police in the village that even then aspired to be came the capital city of the North Carolina playground region one of the hardest ordinances to enforce was that forbidding vehicles to stop on these crossings so that the pas sengers might descend to the ground without being engulfed in mud. Where the postoffice and federal court building now stands there was at that time, according to Major Wad dell, a hitching lot for visitors who came into the village horseback or in carriages and wagons. The county court house stood about the middle of the present Pack Bquare, with the jail located on the site of the city hall of today. There were only four or five other buildings on the square then including General Robert Vance's store, the old Legal building owned by Mr. McCloud, the small office building of the mayor standing where Dunham's music house now is and the brick store structures at the corner of the square and Patton ave nue. In the summer of 1883 there was a vegetable garden where Red wood's store is now. John Arthur says in his history that the building of the Asheville Greenville highway before the war, was the beginning of Asheville's his tory as a resort town. Major Wad dell said this morning that the un tiring zeal of the late Judge Edward Aston in writing concerning Ashe ville did as much as anything ft make the city known to the world. Mr. Yates declares that the . Battery Tark hotel did more than i.ny other one agency to build up the mountain metropolis as a summer and winter resort. Of course there are many factors to be taken Into consideration in telling the story of the city's growth. The Southern Railway com pany could not be left out of such an account. Tho building of fine auto-j mobile highways is said by soma to have done more than anything else to attract visitors to this section; and it is undoubtedly true that the many Inquiries received, by the board of trade n to roads In this territory shows how much future growth and prosperity can be expected from the five highways (four of them already Completed) connecting with the great j national motor roads running ymth I and west across the Continent. But It is only a plain statement of fact to say. as so many others persons have said in commenting on the twenty ninth anniversary of the opening of Bnttery Park, that It was fortunate for Asheville when Colonel Cox de cided to build a hotel on the hill where battery Porter stood for many years following the war. James Roberts, colored, aged 19 yesterday was sentenced to- serve 18 months on the county roads by Judge B. F. Long In Superior court ort charges of assault on a female, it be ing alleged that he assaulted Gertrude Towe. aged 11, at the carnival grounds on Southslde avenue, several weeks ago. The case was tried before Judge Long, the jury having been sent from the room by agreement of counsel. Roberts denied that he assaulted the girl. . -. - ' Herman Holcombe was taxed with one-half the costs on charges of non support. A case against Lewis Eng lish, charged with conspiracy, was continued until the next term, owing to the absence of Cartyle Miller, state's witness. A capias was issued for Miller. L. M. Aired pleaded guilty to re tailing; Leonard McLean and Joe Burnett to larceny, but sentences were not passed in either of the cases. D. Crosby and George Hickman, colored, were each given two years on the rbada on charges of perjury. Waverly Britt pleaded guilty to re tailing In two cases, although sentence was not passed. Burt Freeman plead ed not guilty to larceny. William Dixon was fined S 20 and the .costs on charges of carrying a concealed weapon. Zlon Dixon was fined $20 and tho costs on charges of carrying a con cealed weapon. Zlon Clements, colored, was found guilty of retailing; Blanche Jones pleaded guilty to vagrancy and Texie Benfield pleaded guilty to drunken ness. L OPEN TOY GOODS STORE Has Leased Fart of the Mean Building on Biltmore Ave. Opens Saturday. L. Blomberg announces that he will open on next Saturday a sporting and toy goods store in part of the Mears building on Biltmore avenue. He states that arrangements have beon made for the opening of a com plete and up-to-date store carrying the various lines he was selling when his house on Patton avenue was damaged by fire several months ago. The building formerly used by Mr. Blomberg on Patton avenue Is being converted into a motion picture thea. tor by Mr. Blomberg and he will shortly open it for business.
