A letter has just been received by Captain 'W. W. West, from his eon, Lieut. W. W. West. Jr.. of troop I 13th Tnlted States cavalry, which is stationed at Columbus,,N. M., In which the former Asheville officer tells of his experiences on the night the Villa bandits raided Columbus, killing Americans and burning and looting the stores and residences. I.irut. West states that the raid started about 4 o'clock one morning &rd lasted until about t:30 o'clock that morning. Ho 'was asle-jp hi his home with his wife and child when be first heard the shots. The Mexicans tut him off from the camp and he was compelled to remain in his home wilh Mexicans outside until the raid was about over. : It did not take the I'nited States troopers long to get in action, even though they were taken by sur prise, according to the letter. About 150 Mexicans were killed and more than 200 wounded, ho said. He states I that one troop followed the Mexicans i across the border for about 10 iniles and a little later a second troop went over. Seventeen Americans in all were killed, seven of whom were soldiers, and many more -wounded. Only one officer wiis wounded and his wounJ was slight. Most of the soldiers killed were those on sentry duty that night, ' being stabbed by the Mexicans, who 'slipped up through the dark. The Mexicans burned two of the largest buildings in the town, he states a store and hotel and destroyed and looted many others. The town of Co lumbus has about .1000 population. Many of the private homes were en tered and raided, he states. The offi cers of the regiment sent the women and children to a nearby town tho next day and from there they wore sent on to their former homes In the different states.. ' This is the first letter Lieut. West's parents have received from him since the raid, although they received a telegram the morning after the raid, assuring them that ho was not hurt.
