Washington, March 24. - The b g gcst, mosf universal' scheme for social service in the history of America, one affecting every hamlet In the land, has been Instituted' by the National dum ber Manufacturers' association, in the proposal to build a home for every rural school teacher "n America. . Burke DrugCo., Morganton. and the success of the building of such structures In a few Isolated portions of his home state has conivneed him that It Is a good social movement for the entire nation, as well as tor his home state. ' Tho plan to spread the gospel of homes for school teachers over tho land wan first broached only a few weeks. , 1 Nathan O'Berry of Ooldsboro, a director In the National Lumber Man ufacturers' association, was one of the most ardent advocates of the project, and the success of the building of such structures in a few Isolated portions of his home state has jonvlneed him that It is a good social movement for the entire nation, as well as for his home state. The plan to spread the gospel . of homes for school teachers over the land was first broached only a feV weeks ago at a conference of the direc, tors of tho association. It proved In stantly popular. The Idea was taken up by the United States bureau of edu cation, and the. first result of this co operation between the lumberman of the nation and thegovernment itself is In the Issuance tf a brochure enti tled "Teachers' Cottages," by R. . Kellogg of Chicago, secretary of tho National Lumber Manufacturers asao elation. In co-opcratlon with the United States bureau of education. and which Is being sent to every coun- ty superintendent of schools In Amr. ca. The Rockefeller foundation nas already approved of the plan and la giving $25,000 to foster this work with more money to come. The proposal to build these teach ers' cottages all over the land follows out the Idea that has already been carried Into extensive success by the state of Washington. The national association bas taken up this social service work In the be lief that the education of tho nation will be Immensely advanced If th teachers of the nation's young are properly housed. The theory Is that If teachers are provided wHh proper homes, the country district will be able to secure better teachers, avoid tho constant changes by which the schools are always In a torn-up cnmli lion. , As Secretary Kellogg phrases it In his work, which constitutes a survey of the movement and Its ponsl bllltlcs: - "Under present circumstances, the teaching of a country sellout often be comes simply a temporary expedient for the teacher the first term after soft In a certificate, and ambitious i teachers who are anxious to grow In their profcsslbn, and make something I of themsclvee, go to the city schools Just as soon as possible, where living ! conditions sre better. The country schools are always left with the larg 1 est proportion of young, Inexperienced, Doorly trained toachers. i Mr. Kellogg urges also that the ' teachers' cotluges. or as he calls them, tencheragrs. should be models of san itation, arllstlo, theugh Inexpensive. 1 and so constructed that they may be ; not only homes, but rest social centers : for the rural neighborhoods. In order to further this plan of properly raring for ti teachers, the I lumbermen's organisation la ready to prepare plans to assist rural com munities In providing their teachers with 4he kinds of homes which have proved satisfactory in Washington; and In the other more scattered local ities where they have been built. North Carolina Is selected as one of the llrst states for the general intro duction of this new Idea of a teacher's cottage for every rural school, because though It has already mado good prog ress, there Is still vast room for Im provement. I'rogress Made In N. C. Hoke county reports thut all the high schools are well provided with nice homes for the principals located on the ground. In two of the country districts, homes have been built where thev uttemut to get a man and his wife to come and 'teach the school, These are all In two room districts. In this county It Is a new feature but they believe It Is going to prove very satisfactory. as a teachors home for which the as a teachers' home for which tho teacher pays rent and also for the land attached about 25 acres. This land, however. Is sublet and no demonstra tion work Is done. Union county re- norts one teacher" home at the high school of Wesley Chapel and tho rmintv suDorintendent believes that the teachers' cottage adds a great deal to the equipment of nehools like Wes ley chapel. Cleveland county reports one teacher's cottage In the Bclwood school where the principal lives all the year and manages tho school farm of ten acrea Iredell county has ;i dormitory In connection with tho Farm Life school which Is occupieu by the teacher of agriculture. rmll09 county is erecting an eight -room homo at the expense of the district ni jncr- ritt. The county superintendent any, i We are meeting with many inquiries! as to how we raised the money for this work, etc- and in reply to tnem , alt wilt say that the good. people went i down In their Jeans and gave me tn monev to erect this home with. This home will be the community cen ter of this place, we are sure, from the wav things are developing now. Wilson county: At the Rock Ridge- ountv hich school and at Lucama there are dormitories that the teach ers use as a teachers' home. These dormitories are furnished by the school. Two cottages, one at Yadkin vllle and one at Courtney, are furnish ed to the teachers but the teachers arc required to pay the Insurance on the building. 8,000 JAPANESE ARE HONORED BY GOV'T Rising San, together with a yearly pension.
