"The Doubter Convinced," at the Princess theater yesterday. The film was shown by the city free to spectators, the S. A. Lynch Enterprises courteously turn ing their amusement house over to the commissioners for the occasion- The scenes were followed with intense in terest. The plot disclosed a manufacturer who stubbornly refused to heed the warnings of the fire department of ficials to rid his establishment of fire hazards. Then comes the fire alarm. The firemen, who were engaged in games and sports, make record time in response to the call; but it is too late to save the doubting manufactur er's place of business and his own daughter is lost in the flames. The picture lasted for an hour and the strong impression made on the spectators was evident. The film was furnished by the North Carolina de partment of insurance. The picture showed the New York fire department in action an 1 the res cue work was thrilling. Commenting on this film, Chief Wood said last night -that he wished every business man in the city could see it. In the fire inspections made this week the chief stated that premises,-fortunately few in number were found where the employers .claimed that they didn't have time to keep fire waste cleaned up and out of the danger of a spark. An interesting case was heard be fore Judge Henry P. Lane in Superior court yesterday, when the case of Etta- Crahan and others against the Wnrhovia' Bank and Trust company and others was called. The case came up on a demurrer before Judge Lane at the oneninir session of the . court to separate a suit brought on a deed of trust to the Wachovia bank exe cuted by Richard Wingren, deceased, in 1915. The property involved in t"..e mat ter consists of valuable real estate in Asheville, variously estimated to be worth $25,000 to $50,000. -.- The de murrer was overruled by the court who gave the defendants until No vember 1 to file their answer. The suit was brought by the chil dren of the first wife of Mr. Wingren. against the second wife and her chil dren, to set asid a deed of trust and will on the grounds of mental inca pacity, undue influence and fraud. The plaintiffs allege that Mr. Wingren, v no. was i years ot age at the time ; of his death. Was under the influence I of his second wife when he made and executed the papers in question. The , case now stands on the dockets for I trial in its regular order. I The plaintiffs were represented by . Mark . W. . Brown and the defendants i by Judge J. D. Murphy and Bourne, .Parker and Morrison. J. W. Neely & Co. for your Stein-Bloch Smart Clothes. COL RAY SAYS WAS NOT 2 COUNTY OFFICES NOW FIREPROOF Clerk's and Registrar's Of fices Have Fire - Proof Vaults for Valuable Rec ords of the County ELL, 14, AS University Va. Member La fayette Escadrille Disap peared September 29 In the discussion of a proposed an nex to the county court house, to be built of concrete and steel, in order to preserve the records of the county offices, it developed that two of the most Important offices in the court house have absolutely fireproof rooms which to keep their records. These offices, the county clerk and county registrar, have rooms with walls built 01 re-emorcea concrete, wnn Iioors and ceilings also of concrete: steel windows and double steel doors. In these offices are kept the most important records of the county, which date to the very foundation of tne county itself. A fire in anv nart of the building, it is believed, would not endanger these vaults in any way. The exceedingly high cost of ma terial and labor at this time would keep jnany citizens from favoring a plan to build an annex to the court nouse, which, it is believed, to all ap parent purposes is -fully servlne the needs of the county. While in time there might be a need for an annpv to the present building and many will be found favoring this proposition at the proper time, it is not thought that mis is me opportune time for the move. With Boys at Camp, De partments Call for Wo men Stenographers In a letter to the lnral hn. f civil service examiners, the Civil Ser ine commif-sion states that the gov ernment has immediate need of an enormous number of stenoevnrViAi-c and typewriters. Now that Uncle Sam has the young men of the country in training for military (service, - he finds mat ne needs 10,000 typewriter oper ators and stenographers and tvnewrlt- ers, both men and women, for the de partments at Washington. The com mission has notified all of its 3.000 boards of examiners that they should put forth their best efforts to secure these urgently needed workers. While examinations are now held weekly in 450 cities the commission states that arrangements will be made to have an examination held at anv accessible place where a small class of appli cants can be secured. The entrance salaries range from $1,000- to $1,200 a -year. Promotion is reasonably rapid to those whose services prove satisfactory. No ap pointments can be made to these or other positions in the Federal classi fied civil service unless authorized by the Civil Service commission under the civil service law. Any informa tion to the contrary is unauthorized. Pull information miy be secured from the secretary of the board of civil service examiners at the Asheville postoffice. The scarcity of men for labor is also shown in the call issued by the commission for women u-t well as men to work in ordnance factories. The duties consist of inspection of ord nance equipment, including articles made from leather, hardware and textiles. A. Courtney Campbell, '14, Univer sity of Virginia, class-mate of several Asheville men, a member of the La fayette Escadrille, disappeared Sep tember 2 it. according to dispatches from Paris. Campbell left on a scouting expedi tion and his fate is unknown. He Joined the flying squadron in the sum mer of 1916 and has since won the French war medal for daring. Camp bell was a companion of James Mc Connell, '10, who died fighting for France. The only Virginia man re maining in the famous Lafayette Escadrille is Chouteau Johnson, '12.
