Sec. 6. And be it further enacted. That tho seve ral offices and employments hereinbefore mention, fd are hereby made and declared to be lawful, to " all intents and purposes whatever ; and the re. spcciivc heads of Departments, under whom the same ara held and exercised, are hereby autho rized and empowered to fill the same, and to con. timie the exercise and discharge thereof, at the salaries aforesaid, until the first day or July, eigb. teen hundred and forty .four, except such as are otherwise limited in this act : Provided, That in . all eases where any of tire aforementioned officers, or other persons herein authorized to be employed, have already been employed, and are now in the discharge of their respective dpties, or have been ' so since first day of January last, under the au. thority of former appropriation bills, at a different rata of compensation than Is hereby authorized and affixed to their respective places, they shall be entitled to receive the same rate ef compensa tion heretofore allowed, and at which they have been retained in employment, from the first day of January but to the time of the passage of thin oct. Sec. 7. Andie it further enacted. That the rum of fifty thousand dollars, or so much thereof allowance or compensation shall bo made, to any Clerk or other officer, by reason of iischaTgo of duties which belong to any other clerk or officer in tho same or any other department; and no al lowanco or compensation shall bo made for- any extra services whatever, which any tiers or other officer may. be required to perform. Sec. 13. And he it further enacted. That if shall bo tlio duty of each chief or principle clerk in the respective departments, bureaus, . wjilotber offices, to supervise, under tho direction of his immediately superior officer.
