Colic In the aorsc.X There are few diseases more troublesome or dangerous to the horse than tho colic ; find it is usually in the winter that its an. nea ranee U most frequent. One of the best descriptions of the diseaso and its mode of treatment, is to be found in Steward's Stable Kconomy, from which wo have con. denscd the following i ' , - -" The horse is usually attacked by the colic suddenly. In the stable, he paws the ground with his fore feet, lies do-vn, rolls, Rmneiimci ouite over, lies on his lack, but at times, when tho distension of th) belly is nm oTfiiit. will sometimes lie still for several minutes. When the distension is great, ho neither lies nor stands stilt a. minute, but lies down and gets up Incessantly, strikes his belly with his hind feet, and looks wist fully at his flanks. When standing, he makes many and fruitless attempts to urin ate, and the keener or owuer generally Imagines there is something wrong with the water." Sometimes in the worst cases the swelling is very inconsiderable ; but in all cases, as the disease proceeds, the pain becomes more and more intense ; the horse daslics himself about with frightful violence the perspiration runs off him in streams liis rnnntennnca bctrava CXCCSSIVO OlTOnV and his contortions aro not suspended for a moment. r Sometimes ho Is attacked on the road " If his pace is fast, he should bo stopped at once. To push him on beyonu a wane, even for a short distance, is certain death The bowels are displaced , twisted and stran culated.-partly by the distension, but aided a great deal by the exertion, and no jnedi cine will restore them to their proper posi tion." When death ensues, the bowels are found inflamed, twisted, and generally rup lured, In the treatment of colid, the first object is to arrest the fermentation that is the " primary cause,' and re-establish the diges tive Dowers. " In mild cases, a good do. mcslic remedy, in common use among old .fashioned people, who have never heard of inflamed, spasmed or stranguiateu ooweis, is whiskey and pepper, or gin and pepper About half a tumbler of spirits, with a tea. spoonful of peppcrj given in a quart of milk or warm water, will often afford immediate relief. If tho pains do not abate in twenty or thirty minutes, repeat the doseFFour ounces of spirits of turpentine, with twice as much sweet oil, is muchJitrongcr ; but if . ,ine norse is mucu averse io mo uicuitiuo, . t i . i : . . ... . . .(.. M A turpentine is not always safe." There is, however, a better remedy, which should always be in readiness wher ever several draft horses are kept. Take a quart of brandy, add to it four ounces of sweet spirits of nitre, and three ounce of cloves. In eight days this mixture or tinc ture is ready for use ; tho cloves may still remain in the bottle, but they are not to be . given. Set the bottle by, and label it dis tinctly, " Colic Tincture. Trite dose is six . . . 9 . Ml - - ounces, to do given in a quart oi miia or warm water, every fifteen or twenty mi. nutcs, till the horse is cured. Keep his head straight and not toe high when it is given. Do not pull out his tongue, as some t-tupid people do when giving a drink. Give him room, ajid if ho will not stand till the drink be given, watch him when down, and give it, though be be lying, whenever you can get him to take a mouthful; but give the dose as quickly as possible. After that , rub the body willra-sottrwisprwalli-the horse about very slowly, or give him a good bed and room to roll. Iu eight. cases out of nine, this treatment will succeed, pro vided the medicine bo got down the horse's throat before ms bowels become in named, or strangulated or burst. . , 1 he dolay ot hall an hour may bo fatal. When the second dose docs not produce the relief desired, the third may be of double or treblo quan titv. I have given a full quart in about an Lour, but the horse was very ill. Dottles aro generally-used for giving medicine to horses, but unless the neck is wound with twine, there is danger of tho horse breaking it with bis teeth, and injuring himself with the pieces. The Duke of Wellington, it is said, ia still fond of taking the field not indeed against the enemies of bis country, but against the enemies of the farmer s ben roost, and enjoys a good " Tally ho ! as heartily as any sportsman going. Some time since, - while hunting with a, pack of hounds in Hampshire, the field came to a sudden halt, caused by a farmer s man sta tioncd at a gate through which it was usual to pass when hunting in that country, whom his master, tired of the frequent trampling down of his crops by the red coats, winch, however it might be sport to them, was next to death to him, had ordered to allow no one 10 pass on any pretenco whatever.
