SALISBCRT, AUG. 23 MelanchoHy Cmunlty.—A friend in Burke county iuforms us, that on the iii:^M\t of the 2d insf. a young man by the niuu* of (liibriel Coxe, at the house of Jacob Mull, in the neighborhood of 3Iort;auion, fell down stairs and broke his neck : he almost instantly died. It is supposed that, in a fit of somnombulan- cv, lie wa*? walking his bed-chamber, and stepped off the stair way, (there being )iu huuistcr) and fell on his head, by vliich his neck was broken. He was a young man of excellent character, and highly esteemed by all of his arquaint- Carolinian. Filial fjjftr.h of unbridled passion.—On "Monday, the 15th instant, two negro men in the employ of Mr. Alexander Penny, ai)out 15 miles from this town, while at work in the field, quarreled a- boiit a drink of water ; one of tin m seiz- pd an axe, with which he threatened to "beat the other’s brains out, the latter then picked up a heavy club, and in the scuflle that ensued, the one with a club struck the other so heavy a blow, as to split his head open to the length of eighteen in cites. He almost instantly expired. id. A Voiing liogiic Caught.—A lad, ap parently about 15 years old, an appren tice to Mr. Devo, a respectable tailor in Schohat ie, N. Y. w as very ingeniously delected in stealing money from tiiedraw- «r of Mr. Thrbop’s store. He had for tome time made it a practice to call at the store when there was no one there excepting Mr. T. or one of his clerks. He would then generally call for w ine, or some trilling article kept in the store ellar, and in their absence to procure the article, it was suspected that he made free w iih the change drawer. I'he other day Mr. T. fastened a cord to the back of the drawer, and let one end pass through a small hole into the cellar. It ■jvas ljut a shoi-t time before the boy came in, and o!serving no one but Mr. I’hroDp in the store, called for some wine ; Mr. T. on entering the t ellar,-perceiving the Herd mo\e caui;l't I’oUl of u, and with a suflden jerk intideit I’asi ; he then run up stalls, and luiind 11.e >oung rogue with his hand lasi iti the drawer, and he w as taken, as I'lince Hal sa\s, “in the man ner.” We iujpe this iiltle alVair ill prove a vvarnin,^' to the de: cendaiits ol the long liiigeied faniily, to keeji their hn^ (Ts (;iV other people’s pioprity lest they should as tlii.s chap has done, gel ihe'in trapped. It is expected that these goods will soon drive the liiit- ish nijnufactured printed low priced ?;oods out of the niarkei of South and North-America. H our ralii oes sha!! be found to wear as well and look as well as omtplain goods, we may rely upon it, we shall command the inarkei, notwithstanding the-advantages ot cajji- tal and other commercial arrangements «f Great Britain. I'*- "I A Doctor Johnson, of Xew-Hampsliire, has been convicted of roi)bing grave in Andover, in that state, ot the body ol a Mrs. Hilton, and sentenced to pa> a fine 250 dollars. rrom Uio Lexingtou, Rentoelty, «c]i«rter. e are con.ulent that there cannot be toiind in the annals of parly violence and animosity in this country, a more atro cious act than was committed here on the last day of the late election. It was characterized by a deliberate and diabol ical malignity, which utterly precludes the excuse, w hich some seen disposed to make, ol trick and thoughtlessness. How many, or who were the actors in it, is not ascertained, hut we trust will be, and their names held up to the abhorrence and indignation of mankind. That a considerable number were privy and consentiiig to it, and, so far jmrticcps crlminis^ is, however, well known—hut lor the act itself. It having been mani fest after the second day of the election, that the Constitutional ticket would suc ceed by a considera!)le majority, and it become known that a large quantity of liquor was making into toddy and punch, to regale the friends of the successl'ui candidates after the election, as is usual in this country, a scheme was goi up, and some agents engaged to procue a large quandly of kmkhc taktar (ac counts vary trom half a pound to two pounds) and infused into the barrels of liquor standing opened and exposed, i he miscreants conipletely succeeded— and the lives of from five hundred to one thousand citizens w-ere thus j«‘opardized! Even at the very moment when the infer nal scheme was operating on hundreds and producing nausea, vomiting and crmpof the stomach, threatening the most serious consequences, they w'ere enjoy ing the scene with a pleasure moitr befit ting demons than men. It is not known that it has yet proved fatal to any one of the great number who partook of the li quor, but many are yet feeling its eflects, and it may be considered providential should no ileath occur. We have said that it was premeditated, and we say so, because we are well assured, that a per son was employed to calculate as to the probabje number of jiersons who would partake of the liquor, and how many grains might be allowed to each person, without producing death ! Thus were the lives of our fellow citizens placed on a footing with those of the unhappy vic tims of British Military despotism, where the Surgeon is made to feel the pulse of thesuttVref, froni ime to time, to ascertain how fur the loi’tureofflagellation may l)e carrii'd, w'ithout producing death. A course of le^^al investigation has been instituted to detect the authors of tliis malicous partv triek, and one or two in dividuals supposed to ha\e been concern ed, are in custody, or on.bail, and others we understand h.ive absconded. A child in Upi)er Canada, actually bit by a mud dog, and exhibiting the usual appearances in the subliugural glauds, has been perfectly restored, by the care ful and repeated application of the lancet and caustic to the pimples and tumours heneatli the tongue. These tumours made their appearance on the evuiing of the tenth day after the bite, and were immeuiately discharged by the lancet.— The same process on every re-appear ance of the tumours, pi oduced a cure of this alarming disease in about a week. jM. i\a.
