The Graven of thoc we Love. BY WASHINGTON IHVING. The firve is the ordeal of true affection. It is there the divine pawion of the soul manifests its tuper'oriry to the instinctive impulse of mere nni 1 attachment. The latter must be continually refreshed and kept alive by the presence ol its object ; but the love that is seated in the soul can live on long remembrance. The mere inclina tions of sense languish and decline with the charms that exctud themt and turn with shuddering and " - (rnm th dismal nrecincts of the tomb : but , ii tnence inai iruiy spiritual uutuuun mca purified from every sensual desire, and returns like a holy flame, to illuminate and sunctify the heart of the survivor. The sorrow for the dead is the only sorrow from which we refuse to be divorced. Every oth er wound we seek to hal every other affliction to forget ; but this wound we consider a duty to keep open. Where is the mother thai would wil lingly forget the inant that pe rished like a blos som in Iter urms, inoun every recniiecumi is ? Where is the child who would most wil- pang Jingly forget the friend over whom he mourns? Who, even when the tomb is closing upon the re mains of his most loved, when he feels his heart as it were crushed in the closing of i:s portal, would accept eon notation that muf be bought by forgetfulness ? No the love which survives the tomb is roe of the noi.et tributes of the soul. If it has i's woes, it has likewise its delights ; and when the ovrrwbeimirg burst of grief is calmed into the gecMe tear ol recollection when the sudden anguish and I he convulsive agony over the present ruins of all that we most loved, is softened away in the mediation on all th it was in the days of loveliness who would root out -uch sorrow from the heart ? Though it may some times throw a paving cloud over ihe bright hours of gaiety, or spread darker abides over I he hour o( gloom, yet wno would exchange it even fur the son? of pleasure or toe fjurst o revelry ? No, there is a voice from the tomb sweeter than song. There is a remembrance ol" the dead to which we turn even from the charm?; of I he living. Oh, the grave ! it lniri-s every erroi o.ov- rs every defect, nne i x' iniMiishes every resentm ml ! From the peaceful bosom spr ng none but ioiid regrets and tender recollections. Who can look down upon I be grave even ol an en'-my, and not (eel a com punctious throb, that he should ever have warred with the poor h uidlul of earth thai lies before him ? A KICIACJES.
