In observe the comparative durability of the effects
of the two manures. Some trials of thi? kind have I
hern made, we believe, but we have seen no ac
count of anv which could be regarded as sitis- !

effects of I beatable manure might be traced longer i

an l'-r o- ns a soil abj'Tily pnor may be made by

fr i'. and a fair stand of clover into the bargain,
we think there need be nn lamentations over its
want ol durability. When a piece of land is once
well net in cover, it must, as we have already said,
be the farnu r"s own fault, if he does not contrive
to make it ike foundation of a durable improve
ment. There cm be no doubl 'hat some vegetable pro
ductions may be so forced or stimulated by guano,
as greatly to injure i not utterly destroy them.
Mr. Win. II. Grant, a skilful gardener ol ibis
vicinity, informs us that lie was induced, soon after
the first appearance of guano in this country, v
make a trial of it upon some very valuable rose
boshes. The effect wns soon manifest, the bushi s
qrew enormously, and wore covered with flowers
in astonishing profusion. Contrary to his better
judgement, Mr. G. was persuaded to try it r
second lime. ' What he had for boded took place.
The "rowth which would have taken ydara to com
piete in its ordinary way. was forc d into one
season, and the vitality of the plant was destroyed
by the unnatural stimulus, as soon as it was ap
plied a second time. Even those which did not
receive a second dose, never fully recovered.
Most of them turned yellow, and gradually dwin
dled away.
We olten see accounts of the successful appli
cation of guano to shrubs nnd fruit trees, and in
minute quantities it might possibly be ,.sed to ad
vantage ; but we should certainly be afraid lo
tamper with so powerful an agent, where valuable
trees were concerned. In '.he case of annual
plants, where there can be no reaction, the same
danger cannot exist. With regard to such, w hen
the value of the plant aid warrant it, wc believe
guano to bf the best of all manures, lis extreme
concentration, and its consequent extreme porta
bility, make it cheaper in the end. we believe, than
any fertilizer that has to be purchased. Still, we
would by no means be understood as recommend
mg it to be used to the exclusion of all others.

way, and from every thing, Miat can possibly be
made available. We would have speriinents
made too with every sort of chemical compound,
and we think there is no reason to despair ol
eventually discovering an artificial fertilizer, rven
superior to guano, which may be made in any
quantity, and at much lesa cost.
