Gkaftinij. Aii interesting discovery is
stated to have been made iu France in the
engraftine; of fruit trees. Instead ot ine.k-
; iiir use of a graft, a slip is taken from an
apffte tree, for example, and planted in a
potatoe, so that a couple of inches of the
slip remain visible, it soon takes root, tle
velopos itself, and finally becomes a haml
HMM tree baarinrj fine fruit. This method
is due to u lhdn-niian gardener.
IMPORTANT DISCOVERY.
Jean Wane, of New ( irh-ans, represented
to be an agriculturalist of considerable
scientific attainm. nts, has secured bitten
patent from the I'lrited States for the dis
covery of ii pcoceps: of converting thirty dif
ferent varieties of plants, which glUW wild
iu enormous qualities in various sections of
the Union, into fhi of great strength and
beautiful texture. 9pceunena of the Max
and of the. plants from which it is made arc
oa exhibition at the office of Walter . Hard
ing, in Xew York. Among the most inter
esting of tilt; specimens arc the llax made
froui the .-folk- of the- cotton plant, large
qualhh s of which are burnt on the Southern
plantations to gel the in out of the way ;
the century tree or wild Manilla; which
grows in abundance in FloiiJu; the wild
hollyhock, w ith a fibre ten or fifteen feet
long; the gold nankeen, of a natural nan
keen color; the vegetable silk, ami the ve
getable wool. The process of preparation,
wo understand, is simple, and effectual, pre
serving all the strength of the staple, and
so economical that the flax can be sold at
prices far below those at which the article
is sold.
-
Jif"Spcnkinjr of the prevailing high price
of bread-tuffs and the immense supplies for
exportation which the country is capable of
affording, the Buffalo Courier remarks:
'There is hardly any limit to our surplus
of w heat and corn, and if the demand abroad
hould carry off 100,000,000 bushels, which
is almost four times as much as we have
ever exported in cue year, there would still
lie tin abundant supply for home consump
tion. Strange as it may seem, that with
a large surplus on hand, fully equal to sup-pis-
the demand from abroad, prices should
rule so high ; it is nevertheless, in obedience
to a law of trade, which makes a sudden
impulse push the market value beyond a
due limit, as well as to another law of trade,
which makes a derangement in the ordinary
channels of supply produce, for a time, all
the consequences of tin actual scarcity.
HIGH PRICE FOR HOGS.
Three droves of hos have passed through
this village this week, but the extraordina
ry high price of SEVEN cents per pound has
actually prevented many from buying; while
those who were compelled to purchase,
have not bought as much as they intended.
When will our people come to their seuses
and raise their own pork ? They suffer
themselves to be made the dupes of the dro
vers every year, to the tune of many thou
sands of dollars, and grumble at the extor
tion, but never think of preventing the evil.
We honestly believe that it would save to
our citizens one-half the money they now
pay to Kentucky and Tennessee, if they
were compelled to pay 10 or 15 cents per
pound to the droves.
We think it is bad policy to sell corn at
even a dollar a bushel and buy pork at sev
en cents ; for we know that 1000 bushels of
corn, fed out right, will raise 100 as fine
bogs as we have seen in any drove this year,
which, at 7 cents, would make them worth
$1,800, or $ 1,80 per bushel for the corn;
and when corn can be bought for Go cents,
it decreases the price, in proportion, below
w hat we are then compelled to pay for drove
hi gs . L'ln rt n s till t Herald.
USE OF SALT IN COOKING VEGE
TABLES. Here is something everybody ought to
have known lone ago. and that evervbodv
should now read and remember:
If one portion of vegetables ha boiled in
pure distilled or rain water, and another in
water to which a little stilt has been ad
ded, tt decided difference is perceptible in
the tenderness of the two. Vegetables
boiled in pure water are vastly inferior.
This inferiority may go so far, in the case
of onions, that they tire almost entirely des
titute of either taste or odor, though when
cooked in salted water, in addition to the
can.
Some Potatoe. We have, upon our
table, tt small potatoe of the jam species, j
grown upon the farm of Mr. J. M. Feaster,
of Fairtield district. Its weight, when first
dug, was eleven and a half pounds. This
potatoe is the lurest we have ever seen,
and reflects credit upon Mr. Feaater's -kiil
as an axrricolturaluL Call and see it.

FLORIDA LAND AGENCY.
THE undersigned has established an agency
in the town of Alligator, Columbia Coun
ty, Fla., for the purchase, sale or location of
Land Warrants, the purchase and sale ol lands
generally, improved and unimproved. The
fact now being established that a Rail Road
is to be constructed immediately connecting
me athimi. ami uuu or mexico, running
through the entire length of the county, East
and West, and in view of the great fertility
of our soil, the unusually fine growth of pine
timber on the land, the healthfu'.ness of the
climate, and the reasonable terms on which
lands can now be obtained, there is perhaps
no section of the Union which affords equal
inducements to the emigrant from the older
States. Having had some experience in farm
ing on the different kinds ot land, and ac
quired a general knowledge of them through
out the county, and having acquired unusual
facilities for pointing out such as are for sale
either of public or private lands, he feels
very confident of making it the interest of
all persons wishing inforrr ation, or who may
have deter mined to settle in Florida to call
on him.
