INDEPENDENCE OF THE FARMER. 1
The merchant or manufacturer may be
rabhed of the reward of his labor, by
changes in the foreign or flame stic market,
entirely bttyond his control, and may wind
up in a year, in which he has done every
thing whicfa intelligence and industry could
do to insure success, not only without pro
fit, hut with en actual diminution of capital.
The strong arm of mechanic industry may

which, from tune immemorial, has never fail

Wmi THE GlKJJS ARE. In one of tho
factories in Maine, recently, the proprietors
reduced the wages, whereupon there was
general determination to strike, and as they
are obliged to give a month's notice before
quitting work, they have in the mean time
issued a circular to the world at large, in
w hich is the following interesting paragraph:
"We are now working out our notice,
and shall soon be without employment ; can

old fclloa "s mishap was discovered by a lot
of boys, w ho knew his propensity for swear-

awful cold.
Z3FA chap in Vermont turned New Year's

brandy. He immediately returned home
and charged his neighbors twelve and a half
cents to smell bis breath. Our informant
says that he made nineteen dollars in three
hours.

of the deqartment the meaning of the little

Ur An Irishman called at our office one
day with an advertismcnt, and like aprudent
man, inquired what it would cost. He was
informed that for one insertion, the price
would be $2 ; subsequent insertions, 75
cents each. "An' faith," said he, "I'll only

people afflicted with preparation of the hear
to apply the cataract of mustard to draw
out the information, and she says she has
never known a failure where this advice was

y A Very Loquacious female witness,
whom the opposing coun sel could not silence,
so far kept him at bay, that by way of brow

The (tew method of thorns fruit trees by
naming tu,-. qcions, is a great desideratum
ill th i.:t f when they are required to
Btnni, and the labor of one day will be sufli
cient to plant enough for a lanra orchard
alter the scions are obtain, d. The method
of preparing the plant is as follows : Take
the scions as for grafting, and at any time
after the first of February, and until the
buds begin to grow eoiisidcrahly, and put
each end of tlu ahoot raising good fruit. It
lias many advantages over grafting, because
it is more expeditious und requires no stock
nor tree. They may be planted in melted
pitch, was, or tallow, und bury it in the
ground, the budd uppermost, while the body
lies in a borioutai p.-iriou, at the depth of
two r tl,,-,.,. ches. We are informed that
trees obtained in this way, will beur in three
or four years from the time of planting.

Land Warrants, the purchase and sale ol land,
generally, improved and unimproved. The
fact now being established that a Rail Roa.l
is to be constructed immediately connectine
the Atlantis and Gulf of Mexico, runnin
through the entire length of the county East
and West, and in view of the great fertility
of our soil, the unusually fine growth of pine
timber on the land, the healthfulness ofthe
climate, and the reasonable terms on whirh
tanas can now be obtained, there is perhans
no section of the Union which affords equai
inducements to the emigrant from the older
Mates. Having had some experience in farm
lag on the different kinds ot land, ,!
quired a general knowledge of them throueh
out the county, and having acquired unusual
facilities for pointing out such as are for sale
either of public or private lands, he feel,
very confident of making it the interest ol
all persons wishing inforrr ation, or who may
