I.- - M I WISH HE WOULD MAKE DP HIS MIND. I wish he would make up his mind ma, For I don't care much longer to wait, I'm sure I've hinted quite strongly That I thought of changing my state; For a sweetheart he's really o backward, 1 can't bring him out, though I try ; I own he's very good tempered, Hut then he'a so dreadful shy ! When I speak about love and a cottage, He give me a glance of surprise ; And if I but nint about marriage, He hea quite up to the eyea ! I can't make him jealous Fve tried it And 'tis no use my being unkind. For that's not the way, I am certain, To g-t him to make up his mind. I've sung him kw sonnets by doaena, I've worked him both dippers and ho c And we've walked out by moonlight to-gi-thcr, Yet he never attempts to pr.-pose. You n-.-dly must a-k his intention, Or some other bean I mut find; For indeed I won't tarry mu. h lunger, For one who ;;n't make up his mind. WHAT WILL MRS GRUNDY SAY? Nkaui-Y one half the worid is ever revolving the question as to what the other half will think and my of contemplated actions. In all things this unit be answered before decisive steps are taken. AH such are miserable serfs bond slaves to the opinions of others. They have n self government rub they are destitute of the freedom of opinion. The pbtquitOUS and busy Mrs. Grundy, is their model and their mortal fear, who shapes their household, their feast-, their garments, their sociability, their morals, their religion, their all ! Poor ailing halted souls! there is a wheeze of apprehension in every breath they draw. They are living examples of the science of nose-lead ing ! If half the w.rld arc not BO led. society at least furnishes an abundance of such slaves. They are wonderfully plenty plenty as blackberries. -'What will Mrs. Grundy say." drives them in flocks. To be, found standing alone in some independent position subjects the individual to a terrible fear and torment. It is something of a social perdition from which the poor, uahappy mortal is ever struggling to escape. They seem to have lost all thought of personal independenee. Mrs. Grundy's views determine their action upon all sub jects. To the bate with Mrs. Grundy and all the little Grundtes! Let us have more personal independence, and less bowing, scraping, cringing find fawning to the heavy yoke imposed upon us by tl e world's opinion. Spirit of t he Aye. m mmmm AYho is to Blahs ron the Ixcreapfof ItAcrrELons ' A correspondent of the New York Evening Post, in answering this inquiry, thus speak a timely word for the women. He indignantly says: Is the blame for the extravag.mcc in living all to bo laid upon the women of this countrv Certainly not. We speak of the extravagance of the female portion of the community in carpets, pianos, fcc, but do not mention Fifth Avenue palaces, costly horses and vehicles, and splendid clmu-he. Certainly the women are not to blame for these. Look at the expenses of our young rncn in fashionable dress, brandy, mint juleps, oyster suppers, Spanish cigars. I think if the account were balanced, it is doubtful which side w ould preponderate. 1 apprehend that the fault in extravagant living pervades the whole community, both sexes being equally to blame. Even our funerals here become so costly that one can hardly nfford to die. You may be sure that our young w omen are as careful about entering into matrimony with the other sex, and quite as unwilling to make them selves wretched by m airying thriftless and dissipated young men. . . FASHIONABLE WOMEN. Fashion kills more women than toil or sorrow. Obedience fashion is a greater trausgrcssion of the laws of woman's nature, a greater injury to her physical and mental Constitution, than the hardships of poverty and neglect. The slave woman at her tak will Km it i .i will live and grow old. and see two or three I generations of her mistress pass away. The washerwoman, with scare lv a ray rf 111 rtO t, nlioow lw. Em I. A. . Ml 1 ! to see her fashionable sisters nil die around ! her, and the kitchen maid is hearty and strong when her lady has to be nursed like a sick child. It is a sad truth that fashion pampered women are almost worthless for all the great ends of human life. They havc but little force of character ; they have still less power of moral will, and quite as little physical energy. They live for no purpose ; they accomplish no worthy end ; they are only doll forms, in the hands of milliners and servants, to bo dressed and fed to ordei . They dress nobody, and savo nobody. They write no books ; they set no rich examples of virtue und womanly life. If they rear children, servants and nurses do it all, save to conceive aud give them birth. And, when reured. what are they ? What do they amount to, but weaker scions of the old stock ! Who ever heard of a fashionable woman exhibiting any power of mind for which she became emineut ? Read the biographies of great men and women, who had about a little to do with fashions as with the changing clouds. lwo Men- Lytchbd.
