POEfXOASi. THE BANKRUPT MERCHANT. The following beautiful lines were contributed to the Home Monthly Magazine, and contain the true philosophy of life. The cloud has burst, the storm has coinc, And swept my house, but not my home; Silver and gold, and rank and pride, I smile to see them swell the tide ! My steeds are in another's stall", My marbles grace another's halls, My pictured gems, so rich and rare, Have left my walls all cold and bare. What care I for the empty room T I leave it to its chill and frloom; My household gods were never made To live in sunshine die in shade. I pass alnnjr the crowded street, Men turn aside who used to greet; What care L for their altered mien ? I am what 1 have ever been A man, if not a millionaire A breather of the self-same air, A dweller on the self-same sod, A creature of the self-same Ciod ! Turn with me down this narrow street, No lordly mansion here we greet, Yet proudly fling I back my door, Bankrupt in wealth, I am not poor! For here arc household treasures three; And clothed with sweet simplicity Comes she to greet, who yesterday Could throw the gold like dust away. Her broidercd robes, her diamonds rare, The setting, not the jewel were; A new Cornilia, but to me She is the gem of all the three. From the sweet shelter of her breast My babe springs forth to be caressed; My fair haired girl leans quietly With timid clasp against my knee. Well may T smile at scattered wealth! Contentment, love and hope and health Are store enough to bless one hearth With all the real wealth of earth. And better than this home of love, We seek a surer rest above; Where shelt'ring wings around us cast Shall hide us from the stormy blast. And what if one should press before, And enter at the open door; We will but trim our lamps anew, And wait to jn-eet the bridegroom too ! PIGHTING A SQUATTER. About thirteen years ago, (says the Nashville Parlor Visitor, ef July, lo4,) wlien the now flour ishing city of Hannibal, on the Mississippi river, was but a few huts belonging to some hardy 'squat ter,' and such a thing as a steamboat was consider ed nuite a sight, the following incident occurred : A tall brawny woodsman stood leaning against a troo which stood nnon the bank of the river, look ing at some approaching object, which our readers would have easily discovered to have been a steam boat . About half an hour elapsed, and the boat was moored, and the hands were engaged in taking on wood. Now, among the many passengers on this boat, both male and female, was a dandy, with a killiug moustache, &c, who seemed bent on making an impression on the hearts of the young ladies on board, and to that end he must perform some he roic deed. Observ ing our spuattcr friend, he hn acined this to be a fine opportunity to bring him self into notice so, stepping into the cabin, he said : 'Ladies, if yon want to enjoy a good laugh, step out on the guards. T intend to frighten that gen tleman into fits who stands on the bank.' The ladies complied with his request, and our dandy drew from his bosom a formidable bowie knife" and thrust it into bis belt ; then taking a large horse pistol in each hand, he seemed satisfied that all was right. Thus equipped, he strode on with an air which seemed to say : 'The hopes of a nation depend on inc.' Marching up to the woodsman, he exclaimed : Found you at last, have 1 ? You are the man I've been looking for these three weeks ! Say your prayers !" he contained, presenting his pistols ; 'you will make a capital bam door, and I'll drill the key-hole myself I' The squatter calmly surveyed him a moment, then drawing back a step he planted his huge, fist directly between the eyes of his antagonist, who in a moment was floundering in the waters of the Mississippi. Kverv passenger by this time collected on the guards, and the shout that now went up from the crowd speedily restored the crestfallen hero to his senses, and, as he was sneaking off to the boat, was accosted by his conqueror : 'I say, you, next time you come around drillin' key-holes, don't forget yer old acquaintance !' The Ladies unanimously voted the knife and pistols to the victor. "Old Sands of Life." Dr Hall, of the Jour nal of Health, who has investigated the matter, and analyzed the drugs, finds that the mixture for which "Old Sands of Life'' charges two dollars, when made from the verg purest and most expen sive materials used, costs exactly sixteen cents, bottle and all ! And he furthermore charges, as do many others, that it is a deleterious article at best. The following, from the ( J leaner, is a very severe rap : '"Missis. Editors Permit me, through your columns, to bear testimony to a valua ble medicine. My great aunt has been trying to reach heaven for twenty years. Having a cough, she finally fell into the hands of the "retired clergy man' whoo 'sands off life have nearly run out.' She purchased a bottle of his Cannabis. Indica, from which she gained strength, judging from the violence of her cough. On taking the second bot tie her strength so increased that she was able to cough all day and night without interruption. The third bottle landed her in heaven. Thus, in a brief space of time, the fond hopes and anticipations of more than a quarter of a century are realised for the sum of seven dollars twelve and a half cents. To those persons who are desirous of changing worlds or changing husbands and wives, and all who are anxious to visit t'other side of Jordan, this medicine is confidently recommended.'' It is stated thai the experiments made by the inventor off lighting gas lamps by electricity, are beautiful. It is an arrangement bv which the operator may, from any jxiiut, let the into the pipes or fixtures, and then by a wire which is placed in coutact -with the burner, he may, ly the movement of a mull step or knob, not only excite electricity, but convey it alon- the wire to the point to be illuminated. Its r iapta tion to lighting streets as well as large public buildings, is admirable. WESTERN Why Cousiks Should not Maury. In the annual report of the Superintendent of the Ken tucky Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, is the following argument against marriage of cousins : "From ten to twenty per cent, of deaf mutes are the children of cousins. It is greatly to be re gretted that the law forbidding the marriage oi first cousins did not pass the recent legislature. These marriages are violations of the law of nature, as it is evidenced by the affliction visited in almost every case upon their offrpring in deafness, blindness and idiocy and ought to be a violation of human laws also. The commonwealth has a clear right to protect itself against these ill-starred matches, whose offspring it has to sustain, frequently for life. It may be hoped that this important subject will not escape the aetion of our legislators many years long?r. It is confidently believed that by forbid ding marriages of this kind, and by proper atten tion and care of infants laboring under the disease stated, the number of deaf mutes in the community might be diminished by one half in a generation." A Familv Si pportkd iy Eagles. Luck ombe in his "Tour Through Ireland in 1779," says : uIn most of the mountains (the Mac Cillycuddy's Keeks of Kerry) are numbers of eagles and other rapacious birds. I have been assured that some years ago a certain poor man in that part of the country, discovered one of their nests, and that by clipping the wings of the eagles and fixing collars of leather about their throats, which prevented them from swallowing, he daily found a store of good provisions in the nest, such as various kinds of excellent fish, wild fowl, rabbits and hares, which the old ones constantly brought to their young. And thus the man and his chil dren were well supported during the hard summer by only giving the garbage to the eagles to keep them alive." UNC0LIV HACKING WORKS. Lincolnton, N. C. In nil ages, and among almost all tribes of men, a beautiful head of hair has been, and still is, regarded as th fairest onk. ment of the fairest works of the Creator. The patriciap dames and damsels of ancient and mod' rn Rome be stowed that attention upon the hair which has added the crowning beauty to the chef o'.uvre of the sculp, tor and the painter,' and no kidy, and indeed no gentle man of modern times, is unmindful of this exquisite shield and lovely ornament" of the race. To maiden beauty it is the finishing touch; to manhood it is tie svmbol and warrant of strength and nobility, to-day ti in the days of the patrarchs ; indeed such it always h been and always will be. But often, through disease and misfortune, we he come grey in early life, and bald before we rdtain to manhood or womanhood. Then it is that however much we may venerate the grey locks and reverence the wisdom of bald heads among those of three score vears and ten, we know that our grey hairs are udthtr Venerable or beautiful: and that our bald heads impose upon us many social and sanitary disadvantages. Then it is that the man who can restore the fleecy locks to their original color and growth becomes a real benefac tor. And much as we are disposed to disregard the pretensions of one proposing to accomplish such amir, acinous work, until we have seen the triumph of the undertaking, we nevertheless esteem it a pleasure, resting- upon our absolute know ledge of its merits, to rec ommend Prof. Wood's Hair Restorative as the best article of the kind with which we are acquainted, and which has done all that it claims aim it claims ever, thing implied in its name. This article, in short, will restore grey hair to its original color, and add to its growth and beauty wher ever any blight or disease has checked that growth, or marred thatbeauty. This most valuable article is for sale at No. 312 Broadway. New York News. Sold in Charlotte by H. M. PRITCHARD. February 16, 1858. Sand's Sarsaparilla, ScaorcLA. The attention of the reader s called to the followiaj. cure, effected by the use of Sand's Sarsaparilla: This is to certify that I have a colored woman wh has been afiicted for the last live years with Scrofula, and all the remedies I used had no effect in arresting the progress of the complaint; on the contrary, she con stantly grew worse; till the disease had eaten aw ay tie, cartilage of her nose, malic its appearancp on various parts of her body, and finally commenced its ravagr3fn the roof of her mouth. In this dreadful situation, with the prospect of dcafl staring her in the face. I stated her case to Dr. Disoso way, in Newbern, N. C by whom I was advised to ut Sand's Sarsaparilla; and to my surprise audthatofnr neighbors, to whom her case was known, af using foul and a half bottles she was restored to perfect health in the space of three weeks, and was able to work iu tt weeks from the time she commenced taking it.
