WESTERN DEMOCEAT, CHARLOTTE, 1ST. C. EDEN IS MY HOME. 01! I have roamed through many lands, A stranger to delight; Not friendship's hopes, nor love's sweet smiles, Could make my pathway bright, Till on the sky a star arose, And lit night's sable dome Oh! steer my bark by that sweet star, For Eden is my home. Oh! Eden is my place of rest, I long to reach its shore, To shake these troubles from my breast, And weep and sigh no more; To that fair land my spirit flies; And angels bid me come Oh! steer my bark o'er Jordan's wave, For Eden is my home. Oh! take me from this world of woe To my sweet home above, "Where tears of sorrow never flow, And all jhe air is love; My sister spirits wait for me, And Jesus bids me come Oh! steer my bark to that bright land, For Eden is my home. SOME HOSS. Once on a time, a Yankee who was traveling in Kentucky had a fine horse nd no money, lie had taught the animal to lie down or sit on his haunches when the bridle was nulled pretty hard. and wilt and die, like a single pink, I can't endure it, and what's more, 1 won t. Now there's an appeal that ought to touch some bachelor's heart. There is a poor, lone spinster, in a uicely furnished room, sofa big enough for two; two arm-chairs, two bureaus, two looking glasses, everything hunting in couples, except her self. She read in her childhood that matches were made in heaven, snd although she's well aware that there are some lucifer matches yet she has never had a chance of trying either sort. She has heard that there never was a soul created, but its twin was made somewhere, and she's a melan choly proof that 'tis a shocking lie. She soon gets tired of sewing, she can't knit forever on that ever lasting stocking; besides it has a fellow, and is only an aggravation to her feelings. She has read un til her eyes are half blinded, there's no body to agree with her if she likes the book, or to argue a point with her if she don't. If she goes out to walk, every woman she meets has her husband's arm. To be sure there are half of them ready to scratch each other's eyes out, but that is a little business matter between themselves. Supposing she feels very devotional and goes to evening lec tures, some ruffianly coward is sure to scare her to death on the way. If she takes a journey, she gets bustled and boxed around among cab. drivers ami porters aud baggage-masters; her band-box ircts knocked in, her trunk gets knocked open, and she's landed at the wrong stopping place. If she wants a load of wood she has to pay twice as much Our traveler saw no way of replenishing his purse as a ma would, and then she gets cheated by the CAN'T BE AN OLD MAID. j A Sarcophagus foe Henhy Clay. The exemption of New Orleans from yellow fever this year, thus far, it is believed, is due to the long continued overflow of the Mississippi. We see that a few cases are recently announced. but by selling his horse, and this lie resolved to do the first opportunity. As he was going slowly along he saw a hunter at some distance from the road, whom be rode up to and accosted. In the course of conversation he told the hunter that he had an invaluable horse to sell a horse that would act precisely like a setter, when he was in the vici nity of game. Casting his eyes around, at the same time dis covering some fresh rabbit tracks, he gave the bridle a jerk, aud the docile animal immediately lay down. " There are some rabbits here," said the rider, "I know by his ears." The Kentuckian curious to test the reputed sa gacity of the horse, searched around and sure enough started three or four rabbits. He was much surprised, but the Yankee took it as a mat ter of course. To make a long story short, the wonderful horse changed hands on the spot, S;JOU being the consideration. His new owner mounted him, and invited the Yankee to accompany him home. They soon caine to a stream, which they had to cross, and which was rather deep for horsemen. Judge the Kentuckian's dismay, when, on pulling the bridle in the middle of the river, his steed sub sided in the runuing waves as though he were a hippopotamus. "How is this V he roared out, nothing but his bust visible. The Yankee who was mounted on the hunter's other horse, not disconcerted in the least, exclaim ed : "Oh, 1 forgot to tell you, he is as good for jhh as he is for rabbits." "Windfall for thk Louisiana State Bank. The great rich institution, the Lousisiana State Bank, whose stock is cjiioted at ISO which has three millions and a half specie in its vaults, and nearly six millions invested in paper, loans, dis counts, pledges suddenly turned up the other day the legatee of $150,000, bequeathed by a gentleman in Mississippi, who is an entire stranger to the bank, never having had any transaction with it. The circumstances are these: A rich old plan ter named .Matthews, desirous of spiting his rela lions, left his property, exceeding 150,000 in I value, to his illegitimate children by a colored woman, and in the event of their disability to in- i herit, to the Louisiana State bank. The Will j contained a few small legacies to his brothers ! and sisters. Under the law of Mississippi the colored children cannot inherit and the bank seems j to have a pretty clear prospect for this property. His white relations, however, have commented to contest it, and the bank has employed counsel to (J. Deft, i. man who saws and splits it. She has to put her own money in bank and get it out, hire her own pew, and wait upon herself into it. People tell her that 'husbands are often great plagues," but she knows that there are times wh n they are in dispensable. She is very good looking, black hair and eyes, fine figure, sings and play; beautifully, but she "can't be an old maid, and wn. t's more she won't." Funny fern.
