WESTERN DEMOCEAT, OHAELOTTE, JSfc O. POKTXOAb. DELAY. The golden hours arc fleeting, June; The summer sweets are on the wane; With brown is tinged the waving grain, Then why, O why, delay f There's anger in the word, my love, For life must ever onward move ; Its sands this truth too Burely prove, By running out alway. The fruit is on the beading bouirh , But buds were there when first my vow Was breathed to thee. Then answered thou There dudl be no delay. Yet feathered brood.-; since then have flown, The black bird sings with Bellowed tone, The fir-tree drops its dusky cone, l-'ull over-ripe to-day. The soft air rustles through the wheat, As though to test, by contact sweet, If autumn will its task complete, To ripen not delay. Amidst the stems, the corn flowers lie. Their blue eyes watching popples nigh; Bat neither bloomed, dear love, when I Confessed to thee in .May. Come, an' thou lov'st me, come with me; The bells shall wake with marriage glee, The clerk end panda clink' their fee, And both of them shall say : ''Was ever such poor guerdon given For licensing a man to heaven?" iut bless them both, for they have riven The monster called Delay. A Streak Abkad or Noah. A dispute once arose between two Scotchmen named Campbell and McLean, upon the antiquity of their families. Tin latter would not allow that the Campbells had ny right to rank with the McLeans in antiquity, who. he insisted, were in existence, u-Ur-ffun "from t4u t?p?mtrUi-i- Campbell had a little more biblical knowledge than his antagonist, and risked him if the clan or" McLean was before the Hood. 'Flood! what flood?" said McLean. Ta flood that you know drownded all the world but Noah and his family and his flocks," said Campbell. "Pooh! you and your flood," said McLean; '"my clan was afore ta flood." 'I have not read in my Bible." said Campbell, "ta name of McLean going into Noah's ark." "Noah's ark !" rotorted McLean in contempt; "wha ever heard of a McLean that hadna a boat o' his ain"' Spots ON TMK Si n. We see it stated that there are, at present, eleven groups of snots visible on the Sun, two of which have just made their ap pearance on the Western edge. A very large spot has been recently observed nearly in the centre, embrac ing a central black spot, and a still larger peanmbra) region. It is said to be undergoing daily remarkable chances. HOGS Dying. The Farmers in the lower part of Campbell county, Va., are losing their hogs , in great numbers, from eating what is known as the mushroom. In one neighborhood nearly ail the NEW FALL AND WINTER hogs have died. Koopmann &. Phelps HAVE received and are receiving a large stock of G-roceries ELECTRICITY IN Cats. The extraordinary elec trical character of the cat is well known. On a cold bright 'lay. if a eat be stroked, the hairs of the fur bristle up, and electrical sparks issue therefrom, accompanied with a slight crackling. It appears, too, that the animal may be so surcharged with electricity, that it will give a severe shock to the holder. In order to obtain this result, the cat should be placed on the knees, and one hand ap plied to its breast while the other is employed in Suitable for the Fall and Winter Trade, to which they stroking it- fur. Crackling and sparkles soon i invite the attention of their customers and the public make their appearance, and in a short time, if the ; generally- .arty continues to stroke the animal, he wiil receive j They assure those who pay deal with them that they a sharp electrical shock that may be felt above the will eudeavor to give satisfaction both in price and the . . 1 . a J . ,. i, .,a quality of the Goods, as they are determined to sell wrists. 1 he cat seems to suffer M much as the ; sll;.h low rates J wi t,' d to the great advantage experimenter, for on giving forth the shock, she : of purc)aserg.
