WESTERJST DEMOCRAT, CHARLOTTE, G. THE GIRLS AND THE WIVES. Fomebody haa written the following about the girls and set it afloat: God bless the girls, Whose golden curls Blend with our evening dreams, They haunt our lives Like spirit wives, Or as the naiads haunt the streams, They soothe our pains, They fill our brains With breams of snmmer hours; ttod bless the girls, God bless the curls, God bless our human flowers. The wives, we think, are quite as deserving of a blessing as tv. girls; therefore we submit the fol lowing: God bless the wives, They fill our hives With little bees and honey; They ease life's shock?, They mend our socks, But don't they spend the money? Of rogish girls, With sunny curls, We may in fancy dream; But wives true wives Throughout our lives, Arc every thing they seem. POVERTY NOT A CURSE. Poverty is one of the best tests of human quali ty in existence. A triumph over it is like gradua ting with honor from West l'oint. It demon strates stuff and stamina. It is a certificate of worthy labor creditably performed. A young man who cannot stand the tost is not wortli anything. He can never rise above a drudge or a pauper. A youngiuan who cannot feel his will harden as the yoke of poverty presses upon him, and his pluck rise witli every difficulty proverty throws in his way, may as well retire into some corner and hide himself. Poverty saves a thousand times more men than it ruiis; for it only ruins those who are not particularly worth saving, while it saves multi tudes of-those whom wealth would have ruined. If any young man who reads this is so unfortun ate as to be rich, I give him my pity. I pity you, my rich young friend, because you are in danger You lack one stimulous to effort and excellence which your poor companion possesses. You will be very apt, if you have a soft spot in your head, to think yourself above him, ami that sort of thing makes you menu, and injuries you. - With full pockets aud full stomach, and fine linen aud broad cloth on your back, your heart and soul plethoric, in the race of life you will find yourself surpassed by all the poor boys around you before you know it. No, my boy, if you arc poor, thank God and take courage; for lie intends to give you a chance to make something of yourself. If you had plenty of money, ten chance to one it would spoil you for all useful purposes. Do you lack education? Have you been cut short in the textbook? Re number that education, like some other thing, does not consist iu the multitude of things a man pos sesses. What can you do? That is the question, that settles the business for you. Do you know your business? D030U know men and how to deal with them? Has your mind, by any means whatsoever, received that discipline which gives to its action power and ficility? If so, then you are more of a man and a thousand times better educated than the fellow who graduates from college with his brains full of stuff that he cannot apply to practi cal busiuees of life stuff, the acquisition of which has been in no sense a disciplinary process as far as he is concerned. There are very few men in this world less than thirty years of age, and un married, who can afford to be rich. One of the greatest benefits to be reaped from great financial disasters is the saving of a large crop of young men. WoNrRFUL Feats of Memos y. A gentle man in Massachusetts who has committed to mem ory large portions of the Bible in his youth, and who wishes to induce the Sabbath-school scholars in hi own State to do the same, made an offer of a ten dollar bible to the scholar in Massachusetts old or young, who during the year from April 1, 1859, to April 1, 1860, should commit to memory and faithfully repeat to his or her teachar, superin tendant or pastor, the largest portion of scripture; alsq a ten dollar Bible to the one who shonld com mit to memory the next largest portion. The following reports of passages committed have been received, certified by superintendant or pastor. Mrs Betsy Conant, who has been residing in Melrose, a lady sixty-eight years of age, has com mitted to memory the entire Bible, Old and New Testament, reciting each day in the week. This is certified by her daughter, and also by the super intendant of the Sabbath-school, and the lady is en titled to the first Bible. Harriet Ellen Bullard, of West Medway, has recited 18,200 verses, or nearly two-thirds of the entire Bible, and is entitled to the second prize. Charles N. Iloyes, a membar of the State Reform School, has committed to memory 18,129 verses, aud will receive a beautiful Bible. Lucy M. Good ale, of Northbridge Centre, recited, perfectly 15, 425 verses, and will receive a beautiful Bible. This girl, according to the certificate, 'learned her Scripture by rising iu the morning, and studying before cormmncing her labors for the day. Remember what a world of gossip would be prevented if it was only remembered that a person who tells you of the faults of others intends to tell others of your faults. A Plot to Murder Napoleon and Gari baldi. The Florence corre ondent of the Provi dence Journal says that sc 3 surprising revelations are being made in an investigation going on under the direction of the Commandant Bellot of the French garrison. A Dlot has been discovered, in 1 1 I. which several of the Roman prelacy are said to be j implicated, with no less an object than to cause the assassination ot the Emperor JNapoleon and General Garibaldi. The head of the former, ac cording to the testimony, was valued as high as 500,000 francs, and that of the latter 100,000 francs. Two individuals, with the names of Fran chi and Marian, were the ones to put the design into execution. Friends Malignity. How common is a certain species of malignity, even among those who profess to be one's friends. There are those who would really regret to hear that you had done anything to seriously damage your character for honesty, yet with whatseeming satisfaction do they repeat some silly story about your trying to cheat some body out of a half dollar, when in their heart they really believe the story false, or at least greatly exaggerated. You have various friends, who do not seem to object to showing you up in a ridiculous light, who would resent the charge of your being guilty of ridiculous conduct on a grave matter. They will quietly retail a report concern ing some Itttle peccadillo, while they would rebuke an allegation that you could be guilty of the same thing on a large scale. This is the character of the malignity ot soi.ie friends; and may be termed Petty Malignity. There are others, who also profess to be your friends, that are always ready to listen to and quick to repeat some talc of calumny agaiust your fair fame. They will tell it, too, accompanied by an expression of the hojje that it is not so indeed, that they do not believe that it is so; but then they had it from very good authority, and they have their fears. But they will not tell who is their author. It was told to them in confidence, and a pledge was exacted that his name should never be known in it. They feel no compunction of con science to see their friend stabbed in the back and in the dark; but their conscience will not let them betray the confidence of the assassin, by telling who he is. This kind may be very justly denoni nated Devilish Malignity. Spirit 0 the Aye. An item for Mothers. Drs Bthrend and o:.t 1.1 " 1 f viewer recommenu tne meaicai use 01 sujrar as a , curative means of great value iu diarrhoea one ! in a child of four years in which half an ounce ' of powdered white sugar given every hour, soon gave a favorable turn to symptoms of extreme gravity, which had long resisted all the ordinary means of cure. To Measure Hay Stacks. As an item of in " terest to our agricultural friends, we give the fol lowing as a nearly oorrect method of measuring hay: Multiply the length, breadth and height into each other, and if the hay is somewhat settled, ten solid yards make a too. Clover will take from ten to twelve solid yards per ton. Five hundred and twelve cubic feet, in a com pressed or well settled mow, is regarded equel to a ton of good hay. .
