In East Boston recently, dying maiden of twenty was married to tier betrothed. Before her dissolution she said that she had only one earthly wish ungratified &he desired to be united to him who had loved her so long. and truly, and the hope of being his in Heaven. Fie could deny her nothing he mar ried death! Bolstered up by pillows, and support ed in the embrace of her mother, she was united to her lover. Her feeble voice was hardly audi ble in responding to the questions of the marriage ceremony. She was his, and said she would die without regret. From then until she passed away, she was unable to speak above a whisper. The way Northern Contractors supply the South with Arms. At Harper's Ferry and Springfield U S. Armories, every portion of an arm is made by a different artisan. As each por tion is finished it is laid aside until a great num ber of pieces are made. They are then inspected and tested by the Ordnance officers and master armorer, and the defective picses are marked as condemned, and sold by weight on Government account. The contractors attend these sales, buy the separate pieces, put them together, and then have at a very low price, arms apparently very ef ficient, but actually condemned guns and weapons. FVioc fotc serA mailn Lnnwn tn me bv ffintlmen - -J o in Virginia who were appointed by this State to purchase arms, and came veryiear being taken in hj these parties. The Master .'Armorer now en gaged by the State of Virginia, accidentally exam ined some pieces sent into Virginia by these con tractors as samples of the arms they were ready to furnish, and discovered the mark of condemnation placed upon them by his orders. If any arm com missioners of the South desire to verify these facts, I shall be happy to place them in communication 'with the parties who gave me the information Correspondence of Charleston Mercury. A parson named Owen Moore, once left his creditors somewhat unceremoniously, upon which -a wag wrote: Owen Moore has run away, Owen more than he could pay. Fires in one Year. The total loss from fires in the United States since the 1st of January 1860 exclusive of losses les than SI 0,000, amounts to $13,211,000; the number of fires, 298. J6S?A fearful hurricane recently swept over the northern portion of Utah territory, destroying a large amount of property, unroofing houses, and carrying before it everything moveable. The hurricane lasted forty-eight hours. Nearly all of the principal buildings in the villages of Farming ton and Ogden were blown down, and in the farm ing districts in that locality a large number of aheep, mules, and other live stock were killed. Every fence that faced the wind was prostrated, bay stacks swept away, and in many places the ground left cleaner than it could be swept with a broom. We call attention to the following paragraph from the London Times, by which it will be seen new lights are dawning upon its beclouded facul ties: "The South have no right to introduce slavery into the Territories; it may have no right to turn the educated and moral inhabitants of New Eng land into negro-catchers; but it has a right to the advantages of free trade, from which it is debarred by a tariff devised for the benefit of the Northern manufacturers. We are told, and can well be lieve, that an important element in the desire for secession arises from the consciousness of this in justice. A Southern Confederacy, enjoying free trade with' England and France, and exchanging the products of its soil directly with the great manufacturing and artistic nations of Europe, is the not unnatural dream of Southern economists. The protectionist legislation of the United States is a disgrace to so enterprising and intellectual a country. If concessions to the South are to be the order of the day, that of commercial freedom Ought not to be the last on the list. Clarcmout Female School. MRS. E. J.
